SOURCE: have a MODEL 572.610530 CRAFTSMAN

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. First off you did not mention the age of this tool which would have been quite helpful in my response.

I looked up your parts here:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Rotary-tool-Parts/Model-572610530/0247/0741520/10043672/00001?blt=06&prst=0&shdMod=572610530

You should inspect the brushes (item 11) for wear or broken springs. From what I can tell this particular model has been in the retail market place for at least 10 years. This would lead me to believe that the brushes are suspect. The brushes can be removed by unscrewing the opposing "screwdriver slotted" plastic caps on the outside of the tool and then carefully lift them out for inspection.
Use a flashlight and inspect the armature where the brushes come into contact. It should be shiny copper colored and not dark or black.

I also note that the switch has 5 speeds. Since it does not work on any speed... I doubt the switch has failed.

If you have more questions after inspecting the brushes, feel free to respond anytime with those questions

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

SOURCE: my craftsman rotary tool burnt

usually but take a look at the field for discoloration of the windings, if you have a volt ohms meter take a reading across the field leads and reverse the contacts and the readings should be about the same, if there is a major difference the field is probably bad also.

Trying to change drill bit on Craftsman Rotary Variable speed drill

Lock the spindle (small chrome button near the tool's nose or lever at the power switch). You'll probably need to rotate the spindle by hand as much as one full turn as you do this, to get the lock to drop into place.

With the spindle locked, use your supplied wrench to turn the collet nut counter-clockwise (as seen from the cutter end) about one full turn. The collet should now be plenty loose enough to release the cutter / wheel / drill.

I was using my friends Craftsman Rotary tool to shave down a metal door jamb and it got hot so i shut it off. Turned it back on for a second, and has not worked since. It's been 3 days. Is there a way...

You probably burned up the brushes. You can take it to Sears and have them send it in to have them replaced, but in the long run it will be cheaper and a lot faster to buy a new one. Rotary tools are not made to take a lot of stress. Besides your friend will see how much of a nice guy you are and how honest you are and won't be afraid to lend you tools in the future.
