SOURCE: solenoid will not shut off gas when switch is off.

Have your mower running in park
pull the wire off off the solenoid if it is working correctly your mower will shut down less than 10 sec.
if not then it will have to be removed and inspected
sometimes the plunger gets hung up with dirt and or rust and or moisture
remove it and free it up manually and retry when you see it is not stuck anymore and operates without sticking

SOURCE: briggs and stratton engine model

there are the basic things for an engine to start. air, fuel, and spark. if you are getting spark at the plug one down. try taking your air cleaner off and spray starting fluid into carb with choke open then close. if it starts and runs a litlle then dies then you have a fuel problem. take carb off and clean real good take bowl off and clean with carb cleaner. that should solve you problem if not let me know

How do set valve lash

Turn the motor until the piston is at TDC. Look through the spark plug hole. piston to top of the cylinder. Then set them like you would any OHC rocker arm. BE very careful with the exhaust valve adjustment. There is like a mini disc on top of the valve stem spring keeper. If you get it too loose on a vertical engine it can drop out and it will take you forever to find the little bugger!

Below is only a recommendation....

I don't know how many hours that are on this engine your working on but... I would recommend you hand lap the valves with grinding compound if you know it has high engine hours. It will make it easier to start and have more power. The exhaust valves on these engines get very noteable black gunk buildup in the seat to the point you can not see the "valve to seat" mating ring on the valve head. The heads are not hard to remove... (One at a time) just time consuming. It can be a chore getting the valve push rods aligned with the engine horizontal. Most of the time and I know good Mechs don't like to hear this.. you can reuse the cyl head gasket on this model due to the design. Once in a while they break not very often.

The valve springs have keyhole locks on the keeper.

2000 excursion misfire on cyl 4. traded plug,

Remove the plug and check the compression for that cylinder it should be between 120 psi and 150 psi, if it is low it is a mechanical issue (bad valve or worn piston rings). If commpression is low remove the valve cover and turn over the motor confirming that both valves for that cylinder are opening to there correct travel or height if not it is a faulty hydraulic lifter or worn cam. Also check the valve lash clearance the clearance is usually .012" for the exhaust valve and .008" for the intake valve to check the lash turn the motor over until the valve shuts completely for each valve, then use a feeler gauge go no go procedure. Has the wire been replaced for the plug? If this motor has coil on plug type disregard plug wire question.

Have a 20hp vanguard on a go-devil long tail motor. engin runs at idle speed then when i put the propeller into the water it stalls. if i pull the choke and give full throttle it will run some and backfire

These engines seem to have problems maintaining the correct valve lash settings. try taking the valve covers off and checking the valve/pushrod clearance.on tdc compression stroke it should be .001-.003 clearance. then check exhaust stroke tdc on exhaust stroke. clearance should be same on the other valve then. hope this cures your problem.

Need valve lash adjustmentstats

Briggs & Stratton engines have a designated clearance adjustment that is dependent upon the MODEL number of the engine and are different between intake and exhaust valves. The measurements vary between .002 and .019 depending on your model number and which valve you are adjusting. If you want to post a MODEL AND TYPE I can be more specific with an answer

VALVE ADJUSTMENT

Since the problem was "How To" set the OHV valves, this link will provide the answers using the .005 " valve lash recommendation.
