On our dryer it does have power (the light is on and we can lock/unlock the panel with that button) but when you push "control on" nothing comes on the display. Earlier in the day I got it to work 2 or 3 times by pushing random buttons but now nothing. We tried unplugging it. Without "control on" we can't do anything else.

Hi, Whirlpool makes their control lock very confusing. Often times, people will look on the control panel and the control lock light will go on and they can not figure out how to unlock the control panel. They will try pressing and holding the cancel button and unplugging the washer or dryer to reset it. None of these options work. All you need to do is press and hold the end of cycle button for 3 seconds and the control panel will unlock. If that doesn't unlock your controls, then unfortunately your interface control board is just shorted and will need to be ordered and replaced to fix the issue.
is a button on the control panel with a marking under it that says
"Press and hold for 3 seconds to lock/unlock control". Look for the said
button then press and hold it for 3 seconds or until the control lock
light turns off. The button is usually the Auto Dry Level button for
Kenmore Elite dryers and the Drain/Spin button for Kenmore Elite Washer.
Whirlpool Duet Washers and Dryers use the End of Cycle Button to lock
and unlock the control.
Sometimes the problem is due to
electronic glitch and unplugging the machine for at least 30 minutes may
solve the problem. But if the control cannot be unlocked by pressing
and holding the button specified above or by unplugging the machine, the
control panel electronics may need to be replaced.
This advise is for Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Duet front loader washers and dryers with a Control Lock problem.
This may or may not be an indication of a serious problem. In the majority of the cases, this is a simple operator error. Nearly all these model appliances have some sort of Control Lock feature on the front panel now. This is a designed safety feature that is used to prevent small children from manipulating the controls. The controls can be easily locked or unlocked by pressing and holding the following button on the front panel:
Whirlpool Duet Washer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.
Whirlpool Duet Dryer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.
Kenmore Elite Washer - Press and hold the DRAIN/SPIN button for 3 seconds.
Kenmore Elite Dryer - Press and hold the AUTO DRY LEVEL button for 3 seconds.
These instructions may not be all inclusive for all Kenmore and Whirlpool models, but they are the most common. Chances are, if you have a Control Lock feature, the instructions will be printed on the front panel adjacent to the button that is required to lock or unlock the controls.
NOTE: These instructions may also work for newer model Maytag, Hotpoint, Admiral and Fridgidaire model front loaders as well. Refer to your owner's manual or front panel for instructions pertaining to your sepcific model.
If the Control Lock feature will not lock or unlock the appliance, unplugging the unit for AT LEAST 30 minutes is recommended in order to reset the main control board. In many cases this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches. (Tip Courtesy JSRock)

Try pressing an holding the "End of Cycle Signal" button on the front panel in for 3 seconds. This button is used to lock/unlock the control panel to keep small children from manipulating the controls when the dryer is not in use. A designed safety feature. If this does not work for you, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
