Override Dell Latitude D600 laptop automatically shutting down

I am using a Dell Latitude D600 laptop to charge the battery in an iPod Shuffle player. The laptop automatically shuts down after about thirty minutes of keyboard inactivity. Is there a way to override this automatic shutdown, so I can leave the laptop on for four hours, so that the iPod Shuffle player's battery can be recharged from a laptop USB port?

Yes there is, go into control panel>power options and choose how long you want the display and computer to stay on for before going on standby.
Turn of the display> change to four hours
Put the computer to sleep>choose never or select a suitable time for when the computer should sleep

I hope this helps

Have battery and plug in for laptop. the laptop begin to start with the Dell page, then shuts off. the battery icon shows red like charging but them just shuts off . If I take battery out, no power at all.

This sounds like a problem with the AC charger not providing enough power. The battery never charges enough to maintain power during boot. See if you can borrow a charger to check (maybe from a local shop), or buy one (since you'll probably need one anyway). Don't over pay. I see them on eBay for $12 or so. I bought one recently from a local shop for $25. That should give you a ballpark price. Post your zip code, maybe someone here can help you.

Override laptop automatic shutdown after inactivity

Easily done! Right click your desktop and choose Properties. Select the Screen Saver tab and at the bottom choose Power. In the Power Schemes drop down box choose Always On and the PC will never turn off. You might also want to disable or set the time higher for your screen saver.

You can use a powered USB hub to charge your iPod, MP3 player etc. without connecting to a laptop's computer USB port.
Just connect the mains adapter to the USB hub and then plug your iPod into the hub for as long as you need.
You can also use this hub for your computer/laptop when you need extra USB ports..
