That is because your firmware is outdated.

Please check IF CON version for version, if it is 1.610 and later, this remedy has been already applied. If not send unit to Sony for upgrade.

The upgrade is not available online, which means that IC106 must be replaced to obtain the upgrade. The service manual hasn't bee updated to include the new part number. Even if it was, it would take a brave sole to order the chip and attempt replacement.

Call the sony number listed on your owner manual to arrange the service, or see: Sony Global - "Contact Us"

I quoted the answer from a Sony tech at Agoraquest.

With the remote (only) you can access the main menu (displayed on your TV or monitor screen). You use the remote to make tuner presets to store TV channels for viewing, to fine tune these channels, to adapt your cable box, to set the date and clock and to set up the VCR Plus for operation. All of these settings are easy to achieve. The SLV-R1000 boasts automatic video head cleaning, which operates each time you insert or remove a tape.
============= just set the  auto clock set mode and Auto Clock Set with 24-hour Back-up sets the date and time automatically.

While your TV is on, set to the VCR input and your VCR is on, press the menu button on your remote control. Use the up or down arrow buttons to go to CLOCK SET.
Press EXECUTE
Use the right arrow button to move to the year. Once you get to year, use the up or down arrows to change the year.

It is possible that such an old VCR does not have 2009 programmed in it. If that is the case, 1987 + 1998 both have the same dates + days of the week (i.e. Jan. 10 was a Saturday those years.)

There is no video coming from SLV-R1000 it is just a blue screen

See if the left side loading pin wraps the tape all the way around the video head; if it doesn't more than likely the blue gear , #3-736-147-01, is broken in half .Replacements are available for $4-$11.00 + shipping.

VHS loads and begins play - fuzzy lines immediately and screen turns blue - is this fixable? If so, what do you recommend?

Hi
Have you tried a head cleaning tape in vcr as fault might be due to dirt on video head or on the acl head, if this does not clear fault video heads could be faulty is could be costley.

Sony VCR date only goes up 2006

Goggle year with same dates as the year you want. It'll show up.
For example if you can't get 2009, then you can set it to 1998. Same starting day, and all other dates will be identical.

Recording problem on Sony SLV-R1000

The deck needs a good cleaning. Try using a brand new tape and run it on playback for 20 min or so. You could try using a cleaning tape, but many of them are abrasive. If this doesn't work, you need a deck re-alignment which will cost more than your set is worth.
