Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption (security).
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

Page 9 Descripts setting the wireless secuirty. Make sure you do WPA2 with PSK this is the most secure.
Page 17 Administration > Management describes changing the the router management password. Also a very good idea. Change it to HTTPS only and disable remote management (Via wireless) This will ensure the management configuration is encryted and only accessable via a local lan connection.

I dont have a disk to install my wep key to stop people from stealing my internet

open a web browser window on the connected computer and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press enter. A window will pop up prompting you for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Enter admin for both the username and password.

If it not accept then type user name Admin leave the password box blank and then click ok.

If it still does not accept it that means you have changed your user name and password of linksy.
To get your linksys default settings you will have to reset your linksys router by inserting a paperclip into the small Tiny hole into the back of the Linksys router for 10 sec.

Now you try to access router by user name and password which is mentioned above.

now you will have Linksys router page and now click on Security seetings on top

choose WPA PSK security settings

Now it will as you the security key

Enter any security minimum of 8 Characters anything you like.

click save settings on the bottom.

now try to connect to your Wireless network

it will ask you the security key

Enter your security and your wireless network is secured now.

here is also the Linksys Tech support no. as well. to know your exact user name and password of linksys and other details.

I am trying to add another computer but when tryin to connect its asking for my security key and I dont know what this is please help???

The security key is the password that your router requires for the security settings that have been specified. You can set up a security key (or change your current one) by logging into the router's settings and going to the Wireless Security section under the Wireless tab.

My Dell lattitude D830 won't connect with linksys

Right-click the wireless icon with red X and click on View Available wireless networks. Highlight the name of your wireless network and click Connect. If it asks you for the network key, type in the secuirty key of the router and press connect. That should do it. If you don't know the wireless security key of the router, you can see it by accessing the router's Setup Page through http://192.168.1.1 on your browser. It's under wireless tab then wireless security sub tab

jpconda - you did nothing wrong.
By changing your SSID, your connection broke, because you were still associated with your old SSID (linksys).
Right-click on your wireless network connection symbol in your taskbar and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". If you broadcast your SSID, you should see your new name in the list.
Just connect to it (and hopefully enter the security key..;-).
If you don't see it, go to 192.168.1.1 and enable the broadcast of your SSID ( on the Wireless Tab - Basic Wireless Settings). Don't forget to save your changes!
Once your are connected, you can disable the broadcast again, if you don't want someone else to "see" your network.
