What kind of laptop is it? and the main cause of sparks is that the part of the laptop which accepts the energy plug is touching some other metal part inside the laptop and is causing those sparks.

best option is to have it checked my a professional.

My computer shuts down when i plug in the charger

Assuming this AC laptop charger functioned correctly at one time. Several Possibilities: (1) laptop charger has failed ... connect another compatible charger to your computer to test for this; (2) or the battery has failed ... remove battery and test if the charger plugged in directly powers the laptop.

I have a gateway nv79 and it won't turn on. The

Step 1:
If your laptop charger seems broken, it's most likely because the battery will not charge. You plug in the cord, the lights come on, but the charging light doesn't change or blinks repeatedly. When you remove the power cord, the laptop shuts off instantly due to the depleted battery. There's more than one cause for this, and it's not always a broken charger.

Check the connection between the charger and the laptop. It should fit firmly in the DC jack without wiggling. If it is loose, use electrical tape to hold it in place so the charger can receive power. This is a temporary fix, however, because a faulty connection can create sparks and cause a fire or injury. A loose connection will just get worse over time, so have it sent to a DC jack specialist as soon as possible. Turn off the laptop and flip it upside down. Locate the latch that secures the battery and slide open. The battery should pop out; give it a tug if it doesn't. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol (Methylated Spirits)to the tip of a cotton swab and use it to clean the battery's connectors. Dirt can build up and interfere with the connection, giving the appearance of a broken charger. Let the alcohol dry completely and re-insert the battery. Slide the latch to secure it and plug in the power cord to test it. See if the laptop powers on with the charger only and battery removed. If it does, the battery is the likely culprit and should be replaced. If the charger is truly broken, the only thing to do is to replace it or the power cord attached to it. Look on the bottom and write down the part number. Call the laptop manufacturer for a replacement charger or search for the part number on eBay. If you purchase from anyone other than the original manufacturer, ask for genuine parts to reduce the possibility of problems. Troubleshoot Mag Safe adaptors

Laptop charger smells

Laptops (esp. older ones) should never be left plugged in 24/7. You need to stop using the charger (the problem is only in the charger and NOT the laptop?) and replace it. The burning smell is something overheating which can lead to a fire and sparks are rarely a good sign.

I'd cut the cord on the charger, so it can't be used again and replace it.

Okay if my gateway m285 pc tablet wont turn on how do i know if its the charger or the battery itself?

just do a simple test. plug your charger in AC mains, at the jack end, insert a wire and then try to make instant contact with the jacket of the jack. you will see a brief spark. If spark is there, it means your adapter is good. rest you know that if charger is ok and still laptop is not working it means that there is something wrong with the power section inside the laptop. Even with a bad battary, if adapter is good, laptop will work, provided power section of the laptop should be ok.
cheers

I CONNECT THE CHARGER AND THE CHARGER DON'T CHARGE THE LAPTOP. NOW I I REMOVE THE LAPTOPS BATTERY AND PLUG IN THE CHARGER AND THE SAME THING HAPPENS THERE'S NO LIGHTS, NO POWER AND THE BATTERY IS DEAD....

Hello,

There are 2 possible problems with your notebook.

1) Adaptor/Charger problem. (common)
2) Notebook power problem. (slight)

To check if there is a problem with your charger.

a) Plug in charger to any wall socket.
b) Get a small solid wire (prefferably insulated).
c) insert one end of the wire to the positive point of the adapter or the inner side of adapter.
d) scratch the outer side of the adapter using the other end of the wire to check for sparks. a spark is highly visible on a 12v power.
e) if no spark is created, then there could have been a problem with your charger.

Hope this helps.

Hi when i plug my charger in it sparks and will not turn on or charge

Are you talking about the laptop charger? Was it wet when you plug it in?

Wipe the plug with dry cloth and try to plug it in directly to another wall socket. If it still cannot power up it means the charger must have been fried. You must replace it. You cannot repair the charger by yourself.
I suggest you bring the charge to a radio shack for spec reference

Sounds like the charge socket is not properly seated on the motherboard. I would call customer service on where you bought the laptop and tell them the situation. But by all mean DO NO continue to use it. You may do damage that they say "Is your fault"

Trust me I have had clients that have "Been there .. done that"

Good luck
