Needle wont go into bobbin

Reassembled bobbin according to manual instructions but needle wont go into it unless i turn the control wheel backwards & needle wont pull up thread

Never EVER turn your wheel backwards... that causes it to go out of time. Take your machine in for Timing.

You may have put the timing out, however, try this before you despair too much......

Ensure the presser foot is firm enough for the fabric you are using and that it will not just pull through easily by hand with the foot and feeddogs together (as the needle ascends), or things will not proceed, and you will be stitching in the same spot.

Generally a setting of 3 seems to work for general purposes, but if you are using very light or very heavy fabric, a sample is always a good idea before you start in earnest....also match the needle to the work for best results.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint jams....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.
The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle,
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your
projects).

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with
a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to
disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension.

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits)

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned.

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is,
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover !

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistant diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

SOURCE: thread jams & wheel axel cannot turn

there are a couple of things that come to mind.  
Bobbin:   wound with uneven tension.  Try taking the bobbin, rewind that thread onto another bobbin and wind slowly.  make sure the thread feeds onto the new bobbin evenly.
upper thread:  catching on something or not flowing off the spool easily.
you're doing well, sounds like you consulted the manual and used your noggin, hang in there and let me know if this doesn't help.  we can troubleshoot some more!

Have you reset the tensions for this machine, look in your manual and follow directions. If this is an Elegante there is also a set of instructions on the machine. On the LCD screen there is a picture of a sewing machine with a question mark, touch it, find Troubleshooting and touch that then find the problem you are having and read. If this does not help take it to a Brother dealer and have it reset so as to keep you machine in good running order.

Singer 3232 machine was sewing fine now motor runs but needle does not move up and down


Check if the machine is in the bobbin winding mode. To wind the bobbin, the bobbin spindle has to be moved to the right. (The hand wheel will not turn if the bobbin spindle is in this position.) If it is, move the spindle to the left.

If the hand wheel turns, then check for a thread jam. Remove the top thread and take out the bobbin case. Gently turn the hand wheel forward and backwards until the thread comes free of the hook in the bobbin race. Follow this by cleaning any lint from the bobbin race of the sewing machine.

The last possibility is that the belt has failed. This belt transfers the energy from the motor to the needle bar. One source of the belt is http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/motor-belt-singer-007158xxl5.aspx . You can find YouTube videos on changing the belt. There are other parts that transfer the forces form the belt to the needle bar. However, I suggest you find a good sewing machine mechanic if any of these parts fail.

My hand wheel will work manually going backward but not forward

Hand wheel wont turn to raise needle.


If handwheel does not turn, you may have thread jammed in the hook. First try to force the handwheel BACKWARDS to try to force thread back out of hook. If handwheel turns, look around hook area and you will probably see a small piece of thread. Remove it with tweezers. To help eliminate this from happening, be sure to hold the needle thread when starting off.

The bobbin seems to be stuck and will not move...all it's doing is 'eating' the thread...what do i do? Thanks


Can you get the bobbin out of the bobbin holder? unplug the machine, then remove the needle plate, needle and pressure foot. Now can you get the bobbin out? It is possible that the bobbin holder has moved in the rotary hook, they can jump sometimes as held in by a magnet.

Check out your manual for instructions to remove the bobbin holder, it should show you how to take it out, and then clean under it, there is possibly thread caught in this area causing the malfunction.

You may find turning the fly wheel a little to turn the hook will help to free up the holder and get it out.

So clean out the underneat of the bobbin holder, then reinsert it, and reassemble, thread and test. If this doens't sort the problem, then time to drive it to the Janome shop.

I just bought a janome mini sewing machine. I


First, in order to get the bobbin thread up, you have to turn the wheel backward, not forward. If you try this, and it is not the problem, keep going.

Next you need to check the needle. There is a screw on the right side of the needle carriage right underneath the underside of the top...unscrew this and the needle should come right out. The flat side of the needle shank should go towards the back of the machine. If it isn't, switch it so that it is and try again.

If this doesn't solve your problem, what has happened is that the gears in the machine have gotten out of alignment. There is an easy fix:

Take off the plate that covers the bobbin chase...there are two screws one on each side. Remove these...you need a stub screwdriver, because regular ones will not fit under there.

Remove the bobbin carriage and the bobbin, making careful note of how they fit back in. Take a picture before disassembling it so you have a reference.

The part that carries the thread around the bobbin is still in the machine. Turn the wheel and you will see it rotate. What has happened is that the needle is not going down in the machine at the right point because someone kept sewing after it jammed and one gear kept going while the other one didn't and now it is out of alignment. These machines have plastic gears and the can slip past each other if you aren't careful not to stop immediately when they jam.

To fix it, you are going to have to do some trial and error. Grab the rotating part of the bobbin chase and hold it firmly. Rotate the wheel forward until you hear it click once. Then rotate the wheel backward again and see if it grabs the top thread. If it doesn't, repeat holding the bobbin chase and turning the wheel forward until it does.

Once you have the gears basically aligned, you will need to reassemble everything. Put the face plate back on and put at least one of the screws in all the way. The face plate holds the bobbin chase in correctly and if you don't fasten it it will not work correctly.

Now try sewing. If it starts to jam, stop immediately, cut the threads and look at the back. If it's a loopy mess, you are going to have to dissamble as before and again grasp the bobbin chase and turn the wheel forward one more click, then reassemble and try again. Eventually, you will find exactly the right alignment and the machine will sew perfectly.

I just had to make this fix on my own machine...I didn't want to take it in for repair because the bench fee alone would cost as much as the machine did!

You need to remove bobbin case and turn hand wheel backwards and forwards by hand till needle comes up and remove race hook cover and hook....remove all thread remands.. and reassemble.

Ok I know that youve checked this, but I have to ask.
Pg 39
Check and make sure the reverse lever isnt engaged.

I'm looking at pg 27 and see you have a traditional bobbin casing (not a drop in) make sure your bobbin is wound well and the case is inserted correctly. (they are picky)
Change your needle make sure its in right and tight. (I have bent many a needle just slightly, and it causes huge issues with this particular type of bobbin casing)
Pg 35 gives a test for the bobbin tension. If your thread rolls, the tension is too loose, OR the case may have gotten damaged.
