It could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

Computer is not recognizing

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning.

Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective.

If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement.

Incompatible USB Port Problems

SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer.

But you may encounter problems if your computer's USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are not compatible with the external hard drive.

Make sure your ports are powerful enough to operate the drive. USB 2.0 ports are recommended, but if you're using an older computer with 1.0 ports, the hard drive will function much slower or you may receive an error message that the device is not compatible with your system.

Missing External Drive Letter

If you're unable to find the SimpleTech external hard drive's letter on your desktop after you have installed the drivers for the device, it's possible that the external drive may be assigned to another drive.

Sometimes, the hard drive is assigned to a network drive and you may need to manually change the drive's letter in Disk Management.

SimpleTech SimpleDrive Incorrectly Formatted

SimpleTech SimpleDrive is normally pre-formatted for Windows NTFS (New Technology File System), but Mac users may need to copy the backup software and reformat the external hard drive for FAT32 or Mac OS to be able to use the external drive.

If the external hard drive is not formatted correctly for your system, it may not function or work properly.

External Hard Drive Inaccessible
If you receive an error message that says "Drive Inaccessible," the SimpleTech SimpleDrive may not be able to read the service area of the platter. If the external hard drive emits a loud or abnormal sound, this could mean the device is failing. Test the drive on another computer to see if it is working properly. Otherwise, the external hard drive's surface area may be damaged or corrupted.

Replacing a Defective Hard Drive

You can return a defective hard drive that is under warranty to SimpleTech. The manufacturer will exchange the device if the seal is not broken.

But if you break or tear the seal on the case, any warranty claims will not be accepted and the device will be returned back to you.

How to put songs on The Simpletech Drive?

Just plug the Simpletech in the old computer that has the songs on it. Your computer will recognize the Simpletech drive. You can copy (from your old computer) and paste your songs to the Simpletech drive. Maybe all the songs you want will be in your My Music folder under My Documents. If so, you can just copy the whole My Music folder to the Simpletech.

Once you have the songs on the Simpletech, you can now plug it into the new computer. You can copy an paste from the Simpletech to your My Music Folder on the new computer.

You can also use the drag and drop instead of copy and paste.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

Solid red light. Does not show up on my computer.

Dose it show up as drive letter E:/ underdevice manager in disk drives?(Check out:right clicking my computer icon onyour desktop, select disk manager)
If so,try right clicking on my computer and selecting map network drive.(You'llget the same results by right clicking on network neighborhood icon on yourdesktop and selecting map network drive.)This is the method many people use toassign a drive name (i.e.,letter) to a drive.
How about asking you to format it before you can use it?Then you can recover data from hard drive with datarecovery software like Tenorshare Data Recovery. It can recover data afterdeeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data.

Your internal drive is different than your external drive. If you put more files onto your SimpleTech drive, then that one is going to fill up faster. The best thing to do would be to go through your SimpleTech drive and delete anything that you don't need. I don't remember my SimpleTech drive coming with any software on the drive, but if it did, it didn't take up much space.
