Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Both drum and agitator spin during wash cycle. Is this normal?

I heard a screeching sound in wash cycle and when I opened lid i noticed the drum was spinning at same speed/direction as agitator. But clothes were remaining nearly stationary. Shouldn't the drum remain stationary while only the agitator moves? Service guy can't come out for 10 days! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What is the age and model number of the washer? It could be as simple as a problem with a part inside the agitator or it could be a bad transmission. A complete model and serial number from the washer not the book.

Another thing could be the clutch.

I am going to make an educated guess that your mode shifter is bad. This washer is a new design and there is no transmission. There is however a part that basically serves the same purpose called a mode shifter. My advice would be make a few calls to local GE franchised (ones that will take warranty work) servicers to see if anyone can get there sooner. This is not a part easily changed and it requires special tools. There are a couple of other things that might be wrong but I would very strongly lean toward mode shifter. GE customer service 800-626-2000 for whatever reason you might need it. I would call the store where it was purchased to see how they might help expedite the service for you.

Good Luck I'd be interested to hear how it all comes out.

WASHER WILL WASH ON ALL CYCLES, BUT WILL NOT DRAIN OR SPIN ON EITHER CYCLE

If the timer advances normally thru the spin and drain steps of the cycle you selected, than the problem that would cause neither spinning or draining, is the wash motor is not reversing. The motors is a two direction motor. It spins clockwise for normal agitation, but counterclockwise to engage the wash drum clutch and operate the drain pump. I would ask you to check for motor sounds at all during the spin and drain cycles. The pump reversing in the spin or drain cycles can be a function of the machine's lid safety switch, or if not the motor switch or timer contacts. The lid switch is first thing to check here, for sure! If the machine seems to stop running when it comes time to drain or spin, the lid switch is your best bet!

Hope this helps.

The plastic drum just keeps spinning freely during the wash cycle

Yes! to let you know that this is NORMAL when the washer agitates, due to the "Westinghouse" designed transmission, which in turn is called the "Franklin" design. When the agitator returns back stroke the washtub "indexes" before the agitator strokes forward. Thus moving the load around through the water while being moved back and forth.
Plus! to let you know that since the washer does NOT have "brakes" to stop the washbasket and hold the basket this design allowes the "indexing". This is one of the main reasons your washer has a safety lid interlocking device on it to lock the lid when it spins, because the washer has no brakes to stop the machine if the lid is opened during a spin cycle.

Agitator doesn't spin during wash cycle

If The washer won't agitate
Check to make sure no clothing got wrapped around the agitator. Check the lid switch, timer, and drive belt, other potential causes, such as a bad transmission or bad agitate/spin solenoid, but they are much more involved.
if the washer won't spin, the lid switch, timer, drive belt, transmission, or agitate/spin solenoid could be the cause here as well. Sometimes if the load is unbalanced or too heavy, the washer won't spin. Take some of the clothes out and try the spin cycle again with a lighter load.

Here are the steps to replace the agitator.
1: Take the fabric softener dispenser off and pry off the agitator lid.
2: Use a socket wrench with an extension bar to remove the stud and seal.
3: Remove the agitator top and bottom.
4: Check the agitator clutch assembly (located in the agitator top) for excessive wear.
5: To replace, just reverse the directions.
