SOURCE: loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps

Washer has squealing sound and burning rubber odor

Yes, its basically in need of a overhaul, which the parts involved, basket drive/clutch and gearcase are all wearing out, I've seen this happen many times and cause the squeal/spin cycle and then in time to slow then stop spinning altogether.

From the parts diagram it said this model was made in 1998. The only time I have changed these parts on a model this old is when the customer purchased a service contract when it was new and kept paying on the contact year after year, thus the repair was free to them, but most of the time its NOT practical to keep paying on a service contact for up to 10 years unless you have heavy/extreme, daily/many times of day use of the washer, usually for large families living in the same household.

Here's the list of parts I always change for this issue, now some members and techs. could possibly change just the basket drive/clutch assembly or just the clutch alone and it may work for another 6 months or year and a half, but I found when I used to change the parts separately I had to go back to change the other parts within 6-18 months.

My 1998 kitchenaid clothes washer, model no. kaws750g squeals for 20 seconds or so at the beginning of the spin cycle. It still gets the water out of the clothes o.k. Could it be a belt or bearings? Thanks

Belt of bearing is a good call; I usually lean toward the belt, especially if it hasn't been replaced in a while. Like on a car, when a belt becomes worn, it develops slick spots that tend to slip before they grab, causing a squeal. It's a common repair and although your washer is 13 years old, that's still pretty young as far as washing machines go.

Washer squeals during wash & rinse cycles.

It sounds like you're brake stator & rotor is worn and merit replacement, it would also be prudent to replace the thrust bearing as well since you'll be in the same area for the repair. The way to verify is to place the unit in spin & allow it to reach speed then open the lid. If it squeals then the repair would need to performed, if it does not then further troubleshooting would be needed. Hope this helps... Bill

Maytag Performa Washer

Hi brawn253

The oil is comming from the transmission. The only way to fix it is to have it replaced. alot of the orlder machiens have this happen and keep working for many years after. as for the squeal its normal. its just the break some of the oils have got in there and the squealing is a resault of that. I wouldnt be to worried about it.
