Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Just stopped working. No burning smell. When start button pushed, some kind of tiny "click" sound heard around the timer.

I cannot find the model number. Here are 3 pictures. What should I open? It has power.

If the thermal fuse needs to be replaced, what can I do? Could you please tell me easily as I am far from mechanically inclined.

  • Harry Goh Nov 30, 2012

To get access to the fuse, will I need to open the black panel in the back in the picture above where the main power cord goes into the machine?

You have to drop the access panel first. Next you will remove the shoulder on each side of the machine to expose the screws that hold down the control panel. Then flip up the panel and remove 3 screws on the back end so that you can slide the top forard an inch and lift it off. Then you remove the front and then the tub. Fairly easy if you know the trick. Youtube has videos that show how to do it.

  • Harry Goh Dec 03, 2012

Could you let me know where in YouTube I can find it? Because I don't even know what is the access panel. Is it the white big panel below the laundry door? Thanks a lot.

  • Harry Goh Dec 03, 2012

Dan, I am learning. It's the back panel that I wanna remove first, right? Could you find the YouTube that shows how to replace fuse for Kenmore? Thanks a lot.

  • Harry Goh Dec 03, 2012

I need to find the right video exclusively for Kenmore, not for Whirlpool/Kenmore video, because I found the back panel of my Kenmore dryer cannot be removed by unscrewing like the Whirlpool/Kenmore demonstration video in the YouTube.

  • Harry Goh Dec 03, 2012

There's no model number other than Series 90 in front, but instead, there's a part number in the back which is : 3977557 WHITE.

  • Harry Goh Dec 03, 2012

I am keep learning. I learned how to open my dryer fromhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZOq_ZJBT... . Now could you tell me where the thermal fuse located? Did you mean that is it inside the control panel, right?

  • Harry Goh Dec 04, 2012

It took me several days to open the panels. I now open the front panel below the laundry door AND the control panel on top of the machine. I know I didn't need to open both, but I didn't know which. OK, now I hope I am almost there. Where is the fuse located?

  • Harry Goh Dec 04, 2012

I watched a YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1obHbwPfw... and saw a very similar dryer to mine. Now I guess my dryer is not electrical but gas type. As I cannot find the model number, but I just read it is Series 90 and there is a explosion hazard warning on the back. How can I tell if this is a electric dryer, or a gas dryer? I am very serious in fixing this dryer. Please help.

  • Dan Webster
    Dan Webster Dec 04, 2012

Is a gas line connected to it?

  • Harry Goh Dec 04, 2012

No, I thought it was a gas dryer because It looks really similar to the one onhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1obHbwPfw9s , but come to think of it mine has no gas line. It must be a electric dryer. I am really far from mechanically inclined, but thanks to your patience, I am learning a little by little.

Can you see the you tube video I posted for your type dryer?

  • Harry Goh Dec 05, 2012

Oh, yeah. Thanks to your kind help, I eventually took out the thermal fuse, tested it to be broken, and ordered a new one. I will ask for more help if I have problems after I put the fuse back. Thank you very, very much.

The click is most likely the timer motor moving the dial on the timer. The motor circuit on American dryers is 120 volts whilst the heater requires 240 volts to operate its 5k element. The motor circuit always has the fuse in it. The heating element has limits mounted on it but they only kill power to the element and not the motor. Fuses are usually located on the blower housing next to the control thermostat. MORE HERE

Motor won't start. The reset button won'the push is and reset. I can push it in, but it's really loose and isn'the working right. Have I blown the motor?

More likely that it is a bad door switch. Push the door switch in manually and see if you can hear/feel a clicking sound. If this switch is not made (closed) the dryer motor will not start. If you burned up your dryer motor (unlikely) you would have smelled those burned motor windings! Hopefully as simple as replacing the door switch.

This isn't something we can help you with. Keep a fire extinguisher handy if you want to keep messing around with it. It needs hands- and eyes-on by a pro.

Dryer was running with full load of clothes. Heard a loud pop twice, ran back to the laundry room and smelled like something burning. Turned dryer off, and now it won't start back. Also, the very top of...

Well it sounds like a sound I have heard... forgetting that I had a cigarette lighter in my pocket and having it explode from the heat in the dryer. But you say you heard two loud pops?

Once everything cools down, check again and report back... does the dryer not turn on at all? Does the light come on when you open the door? Does it buzz when you push the start button? Stuff like that.

Dryer drum will not turn.

Hello.

If the buzz continues to go for awhile(2-3 minutes before you stop it you will need to replace the belt on your dryer.

If the buzz quits pretty quickly after you let go of the start button and you smell something hot or electrical, you will need to replace the motor.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Check the wire leads the motor and make sure they are not burned. I had a dryer do the same thing and the motor lead had burned off the connection lug.

IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH YOUR MOTOR HAS LOCKED UP AND FAILED. THE BURNING SMELL IS THE VARNISH FROM THE WINDINGS OF THE MOTOR. REPLACE THE MOTOR. THEY CAN BE HAD FOR AROUND EIGHTY DOLLARS

I heard lots of clicking, smelt a vague burning smell, then machine stopped

IT SOUNDS LIKE A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR,WIRING, OR TIMER. SOMETIMES THE TIMER MOTOR WILL START CLICKING AFTER IT GETS SOME AGE ON IT. IT IS UNUSUAL FOR THAT TO CAUSE YOUR PROBLEM. THE SLIGHT BURNING SMELL COULD BE THE MOTOR. IT MIGHT HAVE TRIPPED THE OVERLOAD ON THE MOTOR FROM GETTING TOO HOT. AFTER IT HAS COOLED AWHILE, THE OVERLOAD SHOULD RESET ITSELF. YOU MAY WANT TO ADVANCE THE TIMER TO SPIN AND SEE IF IT WILL RUN NOW.
