Forget password

To change password of an user account, we need to go to User Accounts panel in Control Panel, choose the user account, click on 'Change my password' link, type current password once and new password twice. Too lengthy a process isn't it? Here is handy tip to change Win XP passwords in DOS mode and believe me, it takes less than 5 seconds!! Let me share the hack with you all!
net-user-pwd.gif Steps to change password
  1. Click on 'Start' and then on 'Run...'.
  2. Type 'cmd' (opens up the command prompt).
  3. Now type net user * (do not omit the spaces)
  4. You will get a prompt like .. Type a password for the user:
  5. Type the desired password and press Enter key. Also note that you wont see *****s as you type but don't worry.
  6. You will again get a prompt like .. Retype the password to confirm:
  7. Retype the password and press Enter key. Here too you wont see *****s as you type but don't worry.
Thats it!!! Oh no .. wait .. Did it cost you more than 5 secs? OK Try this ..

Another Solution

Computer passwords are like locks on doors - they keep honest people honest. If someone wishes to gain access to your laptop or computer, a simple login password will not stop them. Most computer users do not realize how simple it is to access the login password for a computer, and end up leaving vulnerable data on their computer, unencrypted and easy to access.
Are you curious how easy it is for someone to gain access to your computer? If so, read on to see the technique one might use to figure out your computer password.
Windows
Windows is still the most popular operating system, and the method used to discover the login password is the easiest. The program used is called Ophcrack, and it is free. Ophcrack is based on Slackware, and uses rainbow tables to solve passwords up to 14 characters in length. The time required to solve a password? Generally 10 seconds. The expertise needed? None.
3237188885_1527db4c72_m.jpgSimply download the Ophcrack ISO and burn it to a CD (or load it onto a USB drive via UNetbootin). Insert the CD into a machine you would like to gain access to, then press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down. Turn the computer back on and enter BIOS at startup. Change the boot sequence to CD before HDD, then save and exit.
The computer will restart and Ophcrack will be loaded. Sit back and watch as it does all the work for your. Write down the password it gives you, remove the disc, restart the computer, and log in as if it were you own machine.
Mac
The second most popular operating system, OS X is no safer when it comes to password cracking then Windows.
The easiest method would be to use Ophcrack on this, also, as it works with Mac and Linux in addition to Windows. However, there are other methods that can be used, as demonstrated below.
If the Mac runs OS X 10.4, then you only need the installation CD. Insert it into the computer, reboot. When it starts up, select UTILITIES > RESET PASSWORD. Choose a new password and then use that to log in.
If the Mac runs OS X 10.5, restart the computer and press COMMAND + S. When at the prompt, type:
fsck -fy
mount -uw /
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
dscl . -passwd /Users/UserName newpassword
That's it. Now that the password is reset, you can login.
Linux
Finally, there is Linux, an operating system quickly gaining popularity in mainstream, but not so common you're likely to come across it. Though Mac and Linux are both based on Unix, it is easier to change the password in Linux than it is OS X.
To change the password, turn on the computer and press the ESC key when GRUB appears. Scroll down and highlight 'Recovery Mode' and press the 'B' key; this will cause you to enter 'Single User Mode'.
You're now at the prompt, and logged in as 'root' by default. Type 'passwd' and then choose a new password. This will change the root password to whatever you enter. If you're interested in only gaining access to a single account on the system, however, then type 'passwd username' replacing 'username' with the login name for the account you would like to alter the password for.
Conclusion
There you have it - that is how simple it is for someone to hack your password. It requires no technical skills, no laborious tasks, only simple words or programs. The moral of the story? Encrypt your data to keep it safe. Don't use only a password, but actually encryption, such as Blowfish or AES-128. There are a number of programs that can do this - TrueCrypt for Windows, or the native encryption found on Ubuntu, creating a disk image in Mac, etc.

Hi i just purchased a D-Link DIR-412. I'm trying to login to http://192.168.0.1/ and the manual states to enter user=admin & leave the password blank. This is not working. I'm on a mac Os X,...

Did you capitalize Admin? It's capitalized in the manual, and user names are usually case sensitive.

If you can't get through the login process, you probably won't get the connectivity, either.

The manual says set the switch on the back to 3g mode during setup. After checking that, you might try using the RESET button on the back - while the router is powered, press and hold for 10 seconds and release. After the router restarts, reboot your computer and try connecting again.

HP Officejet 4315 All-in-one I am a Mac user and I cannot do duplex printing or two sided printing

Mac uses a generic driver for all printers. have you verified that duplex printing is check under the printer options?

System Prefs -> Print & Fax -> select the printer, Options and supplies -> driver.

NOTE: if it says print using "Generic postscript driver" you will need to install the manufacturer driver for the printer to get the option to turn on the duplex printing.

I need to get a new password to my mac. Haven't used it for two years - and have forgotten . . . !!!

Reset 10.5 Leopard & 10.6 Snow Leopard password
  1. Power on or restart your Mac.
  2. At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down Command+S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
  3. This step is optional, but it's a good idea because it checks the consistency of the hard disk before moving on. At the prompt, type fsck -fy and press Enter/Return. Wait for the checks to complete before going to the next step.
  4. Type mount -uw / and press Enter.
  5. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist and press Enter.
  6. Type ls /Users and press Enter. This lists all of the usernames on the computer - helpful if you don't know or remember what these are.
  7. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/username password and replace "username" with one of the users displayed in the previous step. Replace "password" with a new password of your choice. Press Enter.
  8. Type reboot and press Enter.
Reset 10.4 Tiger password
  1. Power on or restart your Mac.
  2. At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down Command+S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
  3. Type sh /etc/rc and press Enter/Return.
  4. Type passwd username and replace "username" with the short name of the user account for which you'd like to reset the password.
  5. Type your desired password and press Enter. It won't show itself on the screen, so be careful what you type. You will most likely have to enter it again to confirm.
  6. Type reboot and press Enter.
Tricking your Mac into creating a new user account
  1. Power on or restart your Mac (should work for any Mac OS X system).
  5. Type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone and press Enter.
  6. Type shutdown -h now and press Enter.
The third method of resetting your Mac's password requires some additional explanation. Rather than simply changing the password like the previous two methods do, this one fools the operating system into believing it has never been started before. This means when you restart the machine, it will take you through the entire setup & registration process all over again. Do not worry, all of your pre-existing data is still available. Just continue with this process and do not choose the option to transfer or migrate information to the Mac.

Once you're done, log in with your new admin account and go to System Preferences > Accounts. You may have to click on the lock icon in the lower-left corner before making changes here. You should see your original user account(s) in the left column. Try clicking on one of them to convert it to a standard user account (uncheck "Allow user to administer this computer") and change the password. You should be able to successfully log in to that account now and access all of your files and programs. If you want, you can log back in with your new admin account and re-check the "Allow user to administer this computer" option in System Preferences to grant admin privileges to the original user again.

That should cover it! As always, remember messing with single-user mode and Terminal is risky and may lead to trouble if you make mistakes. Considering you're already locked out of the computer, though, you'll probably be willing to take your chances at this point.

Thanks

I just installed snow leopard for mac and now my computer won't print using my Samsung SCX 4521F printer

I am glad to HELP YOU!

This is a common issue for the people who use printers/scanners made for Windows platforms on Mac OSX platforms...
I took a look at the User Manual from Samsung's site. It lists the printer Emulation as SPL (Samsung Printer Language). I'd do a try with the samsung-gdi drivers from linuxprinting.org [HERE]. Be sure to install ESP Ghostscript also. I think the PPDs in that download are pretty much all the same. You might want to try a couple of them if the first choice doesn't get anything from the printer.

If that works, then it might be possible to alter the 4521F PPD. Sometimes that doesn't work as well as one might think. There are frequently limitations in the driver. The Samsung supplied PPD may fail in some or all circumstances.
Also, the support page of Samsung [related to printers & co.] is HERE.

GOOD LUCK!
