Question about Refrigerators
I had a sears repairman look @ the unit,he determined it was the mother board that was malfunctioned, possible relay that was not engaging the compressor, the mother board has been on back order for 3 months! I removed the mother board & took it to a qualified electronics repair guy & he found a loose relay in the board from bad soldering,i installed the repaired mother board back in the fridge,no go! Is there anything else i can trouble shoot? Is there a code or a start up sequence for the unit if it has been shut down for this long period of time?
Have you replaced the ptc overload/relay on the compressor,as this is the actual start and run component that the compressor needs or it wont start or run, remove it by unplugging it off the compressor and a good sign if its bad is it will sound loose like pieces loose inside the ptc unit, you should also replace the run capacitor connected to this component too

I asked that because in most cases, when it is a problem in a motherboard, it is likely a power surge or lightening. I can also tell you that when it comes to mother boards and component level, likelihood, it isn't transistors or anything unless it smells or looks burned. Most shops would just replace the motherboard and ship it as repaired becaue the cost of the IC isn't worth the possibility of something in another IC on the same board knocking iit out again. Short of plug and play, you have no real way of proving this board good/bad. You might try EBAY with your model number to see if you get lucky. I just got rid of an electronic stove because the control board went bad. New board was $150 with a possibility of it going out in 6 months. As I am not made of money, I now have a gas stove. I you could, please rate this as a fixya as I am just being honest and saving you time and aggrivation. Good luck

that's about right, if the compressor is drawing more than 4 amperes, then it is no good.
A reminder also to check the condenser for dirt and debris that could have accumulated at the front, this is a major contributor to compressor failure. check also the fan near the compressor. it should be running at the same time the compressor runs.
that's nice to hear from whirlpool....
good luck tapperal,
tnx 4 using fixya,

As an appliance tech myself, it sounds like the relays have gone bad, the burning smell or sometimes a hmmmm then a click sound can be heard when the relays are out. The appliance place that you took your appliance to should have been able to fix it pretty quick. Questions? Visit my web site at www.GofarAppliance.com (the houston link has more info).. ALSO, all who read this and visit my website ARE more than welcome to CALL me if you have questions. We service appliances mainly in the houston area.

You have a definate defrost problem if the evaporator keeps freezing up. Since your refrigerator is under the manufacturs warrenty you need to make it there problem and get them to send someone that knows what there doing to resolve your problem. there is a timer a terminator and a heater he would need to check out. Good Luck

14 vac indicates a bad motherboard.Clicking could possibly be a bad start relay on the compressor.
Relays are inexpensive. I would replace the relay and hope for the best. Next step would be the motherboard that GE has had trouble with from day one
