Did it come with Win 8? If so do a system restore/recovery to before you had this issue.

That is a common issue when you upgrade to a new OS. You will have to ID the unknown devices and search for the drivers. Sometimes you can use Win 7 drivers for the unknown devices. You have your hands full. I upgrades a Gateway Mx6421 (2005 Model) from Win XP 32bit to Win 7 Pro N 64bit. ID'ing and Modifying the drivers can be a daunting task. Try win 7 drivers on the DVD/CD rom, you may have to modify and change the compatibility of the drivers. FIRST, DO ALL WINDOWS UPDATES and go to dell website for ALL drivers Maybe Win 7 , I don't know if you have 32 or 64 bit OS?

If your DVD/CD ron shows in COMPUTER, right click, select EJECT. I doubt if it shows due to the issue with driver.

SOURCE: dell e510 cd dvd rw not working

Try going into your Device manager start right click on my computer click on properties then click hardware tab. Under this tab click device Manager. Under disc drives find the drive that you are having problems with and right click on it. Then try to update drivers. If this dose not work do the same thing but this time uninstall the drive. After it uninstalls go to your controll pannel and click on add hardware. It should find and reinstall the cd rom and it's associated files and hopefully work once again.

SOURCE: Dell Dimension 8300 - Can't Boot from XP Disk

When in doubt do without, that is remove the new hard drive cable and power, remove the DVD drive and try loading booting the XP from just this CD device. Enter the BIOS and check if the system sees the device. If it's not found in the BIOS then you'll never boot anything. Address it as the Primary device on the cable (I don't use CS) and see if the BIOS sees it.
If you get CD device seen in the BIOS then try to boot the CD in it. If it boots then power off and connect up your 40gb drive (optioned as Primary) on the other cable. Now power on as check the BIOS for the drive and the DVD device. If both are seen then boot the cd and try to load XP. After it's up and running install the other CD device as a Slave on one of the cables.

No icon to control my touchpad on dell n5010

Hi,
It could be under 'SHOW HIDDEN ICONS' on bottom right corner of the screen.
It might have been disabled/unchecked from MSCONFIG.
You can try re-installing Touchpad Drivers from :

Disable mousepad

hi,
try the Fn+F7 combo, the F7 is usually assigned to the touchpad and is indicated by an icon that's relevant.

This works on most notebooks to turn on or off the touchpad.

. Press F2 or F10 (it varies) to enter your bios setup screens. In these pages is a setting for touch pad only, mouse only or touch pad and mouse or serial. You might check that.
