Does your passport have driver or cd included? if there is try to install the CD first.

If you have tried it and it wont work we can safely say that the hard drive might have a failure. If your hard driveis under warranty ask for a replacement and ask if warranty includes recovery of data.

Hope that helps.

    Greetings.

I dont have any idea as to how much they are charging in your location. but they do charge it by size like (example) 1$ per gigs, but you can go to your local technician and have them look at it, there is another method where they can directly hook it up to a laptop, if it works, then it means that the hard disk is fine but the "enclosure" is busted.

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

Its a western digital WD passport 750GB portable drive and its not showing up on my computer. I can see the blue light and feel it running but not registering on the laptop or desktop

Usually what has happened here is the usb interface has failed. The little hard drive with all your data is perfectly fine but the interface can no longer talk to the computer.

There are a couple of fixes. One is to send it in to WD who may or may not preserve your data. You can buy another passport and take the drive out and put it into the new drives enclosure. And third which is the way I've been fixing these is to go buy a usb drive enclosure. These start at $15 and up. Then you just take the drive out of your passport, plug it into the enclosure and you are back up and running.

This type of failure is common to all manufacturers.

The enclosure swap is something you can do yourself. The hardest bit is actually opening the case on the passport. Any computer shop should be able to do it for about $40 or less.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

So i simply removed the extended cable and put the put "WD My Passport " directly to the PC with its own cable and the problem was solved to me ..
