It may seem like nothing is happening but AOL 9.1 is scanning the system & preparing the files. It took about 25 minutes to install in a new computer I built. Hope this helps.

It seems that your spouse downloaded a "trojan" -- software that claimed to scan, but itself is a computer-virus.

Have you tried to use "System Restore" to go "back" in time to a checkpoint before your spouse installed/ran that software?

I will answer this in two areas.
  1. You have an AOL account on a machine and you want to make sure your favorites and emails make it to the new computer
  2. You downloaded and installed AOL on one machine and you do not want to have to download it again.
I will answer the second one first.
  • aoldnld.exe is a very small file that you get from aol.com to install AOL 9.5 on your computer. As it installs it gets the rest of the files from the Internet. The computer would have to be connected to the Internet to use the file from the flash drive.
As to the first scenario;
  • Aol has a menu to back up your favorites.
  • Click on the Favorites bar at the top of the screen
  • Click on manage
  • Click on Save my favorites to a file on my computer
  • You will get to choose the location to save the file
  • Select your flash drive.
To backup your Personal Filing Cabinet:

1. Close the AOL software.
2. Click Start, click All Programs or Programs, click AOL, and then click AOL System Information.
Note: If you are unable to access AOL System Information, go to the help article Open Data Folder for instructions on how to manually open the Data Folder. Once done, click the Back button in the help article to return to this article, and then continue from step 4.
3. Open the Data folder:
  • If you are using AOL 9.5, AOL Desktop, AOL 9.1, or any version of AOL 9.0, click the AOL Software tab, and then click Open Data Folder.
  • If you are using AOL 9.0 Optimized, click Data Folder.
  • If you are using AOL 8.0 plus or lower versions, click Folder.
4. Right-click the Organize folder, and then click Copy.
5. Right-click on your desktop, and then click Paste.
6. Click X on the upper right to close open windows.
You can now send this folder as an attachment through e-mail or save it to your USB drive to either keep it as a backup or transfer it to another computer.

Nero 9 install still won't work

If you already ran the trial period you cannot reinstall without reinstalling Windows.

If not, try using the Microsoft installer cleanup utility.
You can find it by searching with Google.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Can't get Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX.exe to download.

Flash player 9 is actually not the latest version. If you want to install the latest version which is version 10, follow the steps below:

a. Download the most recent Flash Player uninstaller to your desktop from the TechNote below. Please read the instructions in the TechNote before running the uninstaller.
How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157
b. Quit ALL running applications, including all Internet Explorer windows, other browser windows, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger or other messengers. Check the Windows system tray carefully to make certain no applications which might possibly use Flash Player is still in memory.
c. Open the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash
d. Run Flash Player uninstaller.
e. Check if there are files left in the folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash. If there are any files left inside the folder, delete the files.
f. Download and install the latest Flash player at:
Flash Player 10,0,12,36 Active X (for Internet explorer)

When I try to renew my norton antivirus it says the file is too big for aol to open

Are you downloading a new version? If so, when the download window comes up, select "Save" instead of "Open". When the Save window opens up, save it to your desktop or other location that you can locate it when it has completed downloading. After the download, find the file and run it.

BTW, if you are installing a new version, make sure you uninstall the old Norton before installing the new. This is best accomplished by running the Norton Removal Tool located at:

Can't open Internet Expl (reply)

Try this instead because maybe files got corrupted already thats why you are missing some option. but read it first before trying steps

1. Use AOL Uninstall to remove most AOL files
2. Manually search the C:/ drive for all remaining AOL files
3. Run Regedit to edit the registry to find and remove all AOL files EXCEPT
Address Book files.

WARNING: Editing the registry is considered a high-level tech responsibility. New users or users not familiar with the registry are cautioned NOT to do the next step. However, if you feel comfortable proceeding, then:

From Start Menu select Run
In the Run window, Type in Regedit
The registry will be displayed on the left side of a two-panelled window
Select the folder at the top
Under the Edit menu, select Find and type in AOL. click on find or OK

The Find engine will locate the first reference to AOL.

Delete this file; F3 to Find Next and continue until all files are deleted EXCEPT ADDRESS BOOK-related files

When this process is complete {you will come to understand why your pc is slower after installing AOL}, Shut down completely.

Reboot the pc

Use your AOL install disk to reinstall a new AOL system.

The install is prompt you for your logon info and open AOL for you.
Addresses will be retained.

Again, This is not a process for a novice user. The danger is selecting a file to delete that may make your system inoperable.

unfortunately, there is nothing that you can copy and transfer from your XP based desktop. The best solution is to call your provider and ask them for a Vista driver update for your usb modem.

Hope this helps.

AOL Hourglass

Download and install "Registry Mechanic" then do the updates prior to running it and removing anything for the first time. This will get rid of all your current Registry errors.

Try AOL again.

If AOL is still not working...

Un-install AOL.

Shut down completely for at lest 30 seconds, then restart.

Then do a search for all AOL files and folders with the options "Search system folders", "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search subfolders" checked. Delete all of those found.

Restart then run Registry Mechanic again.

Shutdown restart.

Reinstall AOL.
