Question about Sewing Machines

Thread catch glitch

I have a brand new Elna Explore 240 sewing machine. After about an hour of perfect sewing it stopped catching the bobbin thread. I have checked that both the bobbin and needle are threaded correctly and that the bobbin thread has been pulled through to the work surface, but have still not been able to fix this problem. I have a call into the store I purchased it, but thought I would post this question here, in case there is an easy solution. Nothing else has gone wrong with the machine so far, other than a bent needle (which I replaced). Thanks for your help.

Thanks for everyone's help. The shop I bought the machine from was able to diagnose the problems causes my mistaken loading of the bobbin so that the thread unwound in the wrong direction, and failing to ensure that the needle was pushed up into the holder as far as possible.

It is possible that the bent needle may have caused the machine
to jump time.

SOURCE: Bottom thread will not catch

Unplug the machine and remove the needle plate so that the bobbin case if fully exposed. Lift out the bobbin case and the cup that it sets in will be visible. Locate the "hook" on this cup. It is a finger with a sharp point at the upper edge of the cup. The hook is what grabs the thread from the needle while sewing.

  • Thread the needle.
  • Turn the handwheel by hand.
  • Watch the hook as it approaches the needle from right to left.
If the hook passes by the needle AFTER the eye of the needle is above it, you timing has slipped and the machine must be taken in for repair.
If the hook catches the thread from the needle, put everything back together and try threading again.

SOURCE: Necchi 215A Sewing machine Could anyone help I

Make sure the bobbin has a 3-5 inch thread tail
Then make sure the top thread has a 3-5 inch tail
Then hold the top thread tail with your fingers (away from the needle)
& use the hand wheel on the right hand side of the machine to slowly
Lower the needle in the bobbin area & see if the bobbin thread will pick
Up that way

My thread is not catching with bobbin thread

Be sure to use a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle may not connect with the bobbin thread.

If it still does not pick up the bobbin thread, your machine most likely has a timing issue (the needle arrives at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread). There are multiple web sites and videos that discuss sewing machine timing. Or take it for service.

The top thread does not catch the bobbin thread. It worked fine for an hour or so and just in the middle of a design it start having this problem. Please can someone help me?

Be sure to install a brand new needle. Sometimes a bent/damaged needle will not pick up the bobbin thread.

Sounds like the timing could be off on your machine. There are web sites & videos explaining sewing machine timing or you can take it for service.

Elna sewing machine fabric is puckering

Check tension and threading up first, sounds like top tension or thread catching somewhere. Also have you changed the needle, i change mine for EACH new sewing project, needles go blunt and need replacing every 4-6 hours of sewing. Lastly, press seams as you go, this improves appearance and blends stitching into the fabric,

The thread on the needle of my Elna sewing machine wont pick up the thread on the bobbin and bring it up?

Is your needle in backwards, always the flat shank to the back, make sure it is in all the way up in its housing too. Is it a new needle, not blunt, bent or hooked on the tip, sometimes we don't notice butthe needle is very important and should be changed every 4-6 hours sewing time. The shuttle hook goes around and catches the upper thread during stitch-formation, timing of these two parts is crucial so if this is a machine that has been damaged or do you suspect the timing is out perhaps. If so, technician time.

Having thread breakage probelm and also can't track down the correct bobbin to use on the Elna 2005

have you got the manual for this machine? You can download one from here: http://www.ps2netdrivers.net/manual/elna.2005/

It is a front loading bobbin and removabel bobbin case so I think the bobbin is a plastic "Class 15" - like this http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbins-class-15-plastic-10-pack.aspx

Thread breaking could be caused several factors such as the thread actually being old and brittle, the needle or needle plate having burrs and catching the thread, incorrect threading, bobbin in bobbin case the wrong way, or top tension discs playing up/too tight or thread catching somewhere in the threading path.

I'd suggest that you trouble shoot this and refer to the manual for cleaning instructions. If you can access them clean between the tension discs (turn tension down to zero and "floss" between the by running the selvage edge of a piece of clean cotton scrap through the discs to remove any lint/dye buildup). Wind a fresh bobbin and rethread referring to the manual to ensure the bobbin is turning the right way. New needle and rethread top thread refering to threading diagram. Tension on 5 and test sew again.

If you are still having problems, then the machine may benefit from a service by your local Elna dealer, a good service and clean at least every 2 years is recommended.
