I have tried turning it off, resetting unlock position and turning back on, but continue to get error 5020

you can always try to install the printer on a friend's pc as a test of the printer...do you have the install cd? if not try canon's site to download it.

this may already be mechanical and may need service repair, but yuo may give this a try. Basically same steps you did. turn off the printer, disconnect it from the computer and unplug its power cord. press its power button for about 10 seconds just to discharge any power left to it. Next, open the document cover and adjust the scanner lock switch to the lock position. Wait about about 10 seconds, then adjust the scanner lock switch back to the "release" position, and close the document cover. Connect the power cord back, then switch on the printer, wait for about 30 secs to a minute, then switch it off again. Connect the printer back to the system, then switch it on and test it. Hope this will get you moving forward on this situation.

I will suggest you reset your canon printer, Follow this steps to reset your canon printer.
1. Turn off printer.
2. retaining button Resume/Cancel press button POWER - indicator it will catch fire by green color.
3. let go button Resume/Cancel, continuing to retain POWER.
4. press button Resume/Cancel of 2 times, retaining POWER, after which let go all buttons.
5. when indicator will be lit BY GREEN - press button Resume/Cancel of 4 times.
6. turn off printer by button POWER. Power on later to see what happens. let me know if additional information is required.
