Windows 98 is very old technology that cannot support many of the camera's of today. The camera manual will confirm the minimum operating system requirements which you may find excludes 98. There is an XP upgrade from 98 which is not too expensive and which should solve your problem.
Hope this helps.

Instructions for downloading pictures from canon

You can either use the USB cable that came with your camera, which will be recognized as an external peripheral by your PC when you plug it in.

Easier way is to use a smart card reader (those are now available just about anywhere at prices starting at about $5) that will plug into a USB port on your PC and will be recognized as an external drive by your PC.

In both cases, you transfer files between the (camera or smart card reader) and your PC the same way you would transfer regular files between directories on your PC.

Make sure the camera is on when you insert it via usb, check in the camera setup that it is set for PC USB.
Did the camera come with any drivers?
It is possible that the camera needs additional driver in order for it to operate correctly on the PC.
What operating system are you using?
More detail would be helpful, but what does it say on the screen when you plug the camera in?
Does it install it correctly or does it say there is a problem?
If it loads correctly the a new drive should appear in 'My computer'

Come back with more detail, I might be able to help more
cheers

Camera No Longer Being Recognized

Does it connect to the PC via a USB cable? Then try connecting to a different USB port or if you have try a new USB cable. I had the same problem with my IXUS 400 and changing to a new USB port, directly to the PC - not a USB hub, it worked. However now I have several issues with my camera - no sound or image on the LCD screen, but I think these are unrelated.
