open the top of the vacuum. remove ONLY the filter element. There should be a ball about a two inch diameter inside the cage. It's purpose is to shut off the vacuum flow when water reaches a high in the canister.

well if you can find the motor ( find a place that deals with the manufacturer directly so you get the right part ) and it isnt to expensive, most shop vacs are pretty easy, if you look under the top you should see about four screws, remove those and the top should come of giving you access to the motor, take note about the wires and what they hook up to. i doubt the motor is fastend down other than that.

If you are going to use the wet vac to remove water, be sure to remove the bag inside the canister first. Also, some wet vacs have an internal float that has to be installed, but that may not be the case with yours.

There are two (or is it three) plastic screws on the underside of it. This allows it to be partially split so you can clean the area around the brush roll.
To strip it further needs a Torx T15 bit, but I don't advise doing that unless you know what you are doing and are confident about the re-assembly.
Cleaning around the brush roll area is all most people need to do with these and that is a simple matter.

Keep it on. The purpose is to give you something to clean, a time or two, rather than have to replace the more expensive filter. I know it seems redundant, but all of the pieces filter better than just a bag. Also, if the bag gets any damp or wet material, it breaks and your next filters are the foam and paper filter.

I have Ridgid wet/dry shop vac, I was vacuuming

Did you have a paper/cardboard filter attached to the top part of the unit? Sounds like you didn't have a filter or the silicate material got past it and into the motor and windings. Bad news if this is the case. Try taking the top part off, turn it on to see if it runs without the bottom tank section. Double check to see if your vac has a fuze. If it won't go on you'll need to dismantle the upper unit and clean it all out. Hand turn the motor and see if it easily turns or is sluggish. My wife used my wet/dry vac without the filter and wrecked it with sheetrock dust into the motor. I dismantled the top, cleaned it twice and it's still no good. By the way, generally you have to take the paper filter out if you are vacuuming wet up. If you leave the paper filter on and vacuum wet up, the paper filter will get wet, shred and get pulled into the upper motor unit. A wet/dry vac isn't really made to pump water (by the gallons) out of places, so don't expect that. Okay yes you can often hook up an outlet hose to the drain port at the back of the tank and vacuum quantities of water, but it's not really made to do this.

No power. electric is OK. system will not turn on. Please help

Detach the vac itself from low voltage thin wiring leading to the house. With the vac plugged into power, try the manual switch and then try shorting across the low voltage exterior terminals with a rubber gripped set of pliers.
If you can hear a clicking inside, this is the vac's relay trying to start the motor. If the vac is more than 5 years old , or used more than 2 hours a week, you may need new carbon brushes, or a motor overhaul or replacement depending on wear. Carbon brushes are specific to the motor model # inside the vac, most often an AMTEK Lamb motor.
If you need brushes, the motors comutator should also be inspected for excess, wear, like gap ing between its conatct segments and "apple core" shaped wear
.
You you have a meter and can test for continuity across the motor leads, do so and post back.

If you don't have a meter, you will likely want to lift the vac off the wall after these checks and take to a repair shop, saving $$$$ for a house call...

Hoover upright has stopped working and tripped the circuit breaker. Where is the fuse located on the hoover ?

Most Hoover uprights do not have fuse. Some canisters doe but it is a thermal shutoff. When the vac overheats and cools down it restarts on its own.
You very likly have motor damage, but if lucky you could have an obstruction in the fan causing a jam. Do not attempt to run again.Lift the lid off the vac and see if the drive shaft for the belt will turn. If not motor will need to be removed and fan housing and intake area inspected. If the motor shaft turns and you hear scratching or clicking, the carbon brushes are likely damaged often requiring a replacement motor. If the fan is jammed you will need to dismantle the fan housing. Remove the two motor clamps and there will be four screws on the side of the housing to release the fan cover. The fan should rotate freely in your hand.

Do not turn on again. You have an obstruction in the fan . You will need to remove the motor from the lower housing, dismantle the fan cover and remove the obstruction, possibly replace the fan as well.
The lower housing plate can be removed revealing a set of clamps around the motor hosusing which will in tun release the motor from the base of the vac.

I need replacement carbon brushes for the motor. I haven't been able to find a source.

Try looking for a power tool repair shop, they usually have some brushes and can order more. I have put Hoover brushes in my Shop-Vac.
Look for some that are close to matching,( spring size, spring length, brush length). If the brushes are a little large they can be made smaller by dragging on a flat file. Carefully fit them so they slide into the brushholder nicely.
I have even soldered different ends onto the pigtails, whatever works----I am a pragmatist!
You could also look for an electric motor repair shop in your area- they have suppliers.

How do you dismantle handle to replace aforementioned hose?
Swing arm on unit goes all the way to the floor. Is this normal? Is there a "stop" broken that caused the hose to stretch, and ultimately break?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover SteamVac Carpet / Upholstery Deep Carpet Cleaner.

There are handle screws that you can get into the handle and then you can back track the replace the interior hose for the cleaning attachment. There should not be a stop that caused the hose to stretch ad break. The hoses after a while do get old crack and break due from normal use or if the bend @ sharp angles, this is common among all vinyl vacuum cleaner hoses. You should really check with your local factory authorized Hoover vac dealer in your area or , please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
