Be careful doing that: answer: connect a test lead with a jumper wire to a long screwdriver and insert under the anode cup (rubber etc) and touch the jumper to ground on the metal frame inside the set.

SOURCE: Remove wire

If you pull the speaker grille and unscrew the service door behind it, you will find a sticker on the surrounding frame of where the hv splitter is(the one with 4 red thick wires), I think you are supposed to turn the wire you want out 5 times and pull, but I am not sure so look for that important note.

This sounds like the coolant fluid needs to be changed - the coolant turns milky after awhile and you'll get a dull image.

Change CRT coolant in AKAI Pt5598HD

The CRTs in modern TVs do not hold a charge because the HV circuit shunts it to ground whenever you power down the TV. You can clean the lens of the CRTs but you can't change the coolant or should you even try. You'll notice that its sealed from the factory. If you suspect a problem with the coolant or that it has dried up or leaked out, you must replace that CRT.

Need to replace the two convergence IC's in my 65" mitsubishi DLP. Other than unplugging it, any other safety measures I need to take such as discharging the CRT's, etc.?

As long as you don't touch anything like the crts, the flyback transformer etc you are fine to unsolder the ic's and replace them. No high voltage current is in that area. Just be smart and take your time and always watch where you are putting your hands and your tools. Also, do not wear rings, or watches while working in the tv. IC's are a very easy removal and if you simply stay away from the high voltage components you'll be fine.

How to get to the crt's to clean?

Hello fixitmama33,
Be very careful these CRTs contain a hazardous coolant material in the cooling jacket and should only be handled by a professional TV repair person. First, if you are intent on doing this. I would suggest you get a schematic and study the exploded view of the TV and then follow the instructions on how to get to the CRTs properly.  I say this because there are a few things you have to do before removing the CRTs first you have to discharge the stored voltage in the CRTs (around 2Kv-15Kv) "Yes I have seen a CRT store up to 15K volts", This should only be attempted by someone who knows what to expect.
I hope this helps
Thank you,

Hoyachi Ultravision Rear Projection TV Circa appx 1994

It looks like the high voltage that goes to the CRTs is shorting to ground, probably due to a coolant leak on one of them.
I would suggest to try to locate where the arcing is taking place and disconnect the wire that feeds the high voltage to that CRT and the crackling sound will stop and the TV will power up but without one color.
Just be very careful when working around the high voltage area. I hope you take all the necessary step to ensure your safety.
Let me know if you need further assistance after locating the defective CRT.

First, need to narrow down the problem. Did you perhaps change the input source? To this point, change the input source, there should be text on screen that indicates what source is you see this? Change the you see the volume level bar on the screen?
