Try holding sown the start button and the bin/timer button at the same time while the camera is set to look at photos rather than to take photos

How to disassemble a Makinon mc zoom lens

first off, you need special tools to get at the inner elements of a zoom lens - i've been working on lenses for 20 years, and i still don't have every tool needed sometimes :-)

second, makinon lenses are not really worth anything, even if they are in perfect condition - my advice is to buy a better zoom used that is in perfect condition already, since you would have spent that money in tools to try and clean this one, and everyone screws up the first lens they ever try to take apart...

some good lens brand names are sigma, tamron, kiron or any with the same camera name as your camera (canon, nikon, etc)

stick with japan made optics - can't go wrong usually.

good luck...

Lens error

There is a possibility that a bit of grit or debris has got stuck in the retraction mechanism or the lens has been knocked out of alignment.

The camera will have switches inside to tell it when the lens is retracted or extended and if it doesn't make contact within the expected time then it will give this error.

If the there is no warrantee or you dont mind voiding it then I would suggest carefully disassembling the camera and turning the retraction motor by hand to see where the problem is.

Please comment again if you discover anything.

Good luck

Camera says lens error, restart camera...

Hi, On Canon camera's that error is typically seen when the camera's been dropped and the lens is now out of place. For the A490 specifically that's something that can't be fixed as it's such an inexpensive camera and fixing that problem, if it can even be fixed, costs upwards of $300.

When i turn on my camera it says lens error and the lenso stays half way out

Hi.

If the lens do not extend completely, then problem is lens itself.. When this happens the motor is unable to retract or to extend the lens either because one of the lens rings is damaged, or because of dust inside lens rings.
Sometimes lens error occurs because batteries are nearly drained and insufficient power to lens motor. This will cause the lens rings getting out of alignment and you get jammed lens. In other cases the lens gets jammed either because of dust or dirt or because of a mechanical problem. As a result the camera freezes with lens half of the way out.

In some case the len
s can be unjammed manually (see the tips below), more commonly the lens and the camera must be disassembled and there is no other way to fix the problem.

Try the tricks below. They rarely work, but you never know:

Test always with fully charged batteries you need as much power as you can get to unlock the lens. Ensure that batteries are Alkaline or good working rechargeable.
If there is dust or sand in lens blow air with a compressor on top the lens..
Sometimes methods like helping the lens movement while turning camera on and off works, but this methods can do more damage to the camera. Help out the lens while turning the camera on.
Remove the battery, point camera to the floor and put back the battery while holding on button and still pointing to the floor. Turn on this way and see if it works.
Connect camera to USB (that gives extra +5V power) and turn on still pointing to the floor.

You find some more detailed hint using the links below. The links refer to digital cameras (no film). In your case disregard all the parts that do not apply( e.g some hint is for lens not retracting - the cause of the problem is the same and I reported the link).

Lens Error.

Most of the time the lens error must be repaired disassembling the camera. Sometimes lens rings must be replaced. If you need a quote on repair see:

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

There is a small black tube like piece that has come loose inside my lense and I need instructions on how to disassemble. It has something to do with the zoom I think?? Nikkor 18-55 ED

The small black tube piece is a sliding light baffle which has come loose. Zoom lenses are very complicated to disassemble, and you have to have both the knowledge, experience, and the right tools to disassemble a zoom lens.

The tube should never have come loose in the first place, so I would classify this as a product defect. Contact Nikon, fully describe the problem, and insist that they repair the lens at no charge (although you will have to pay to ship the lens to their repair center).

Canon Powershot S2 IS Disassemly guide?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it without disassembly. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Lens focusing problem

I doubt that there is anything you can do yourself. Are you willing to disassemble the lens? I wouldn't be willing to do so.

Take it to a camera repairer and get a quote to see if it is economical to repair or cheaper/easier to replace.

Good luck.
