Question about Brother Sewing Machines
I have experience cleaning an up thread spring in an old machine because it is easy to just unscrew the front part however I am wondering how I get the plastic cover off in the new machines to get at the spring without breaking something. The tension is all crazy where the up thread does not seem to be engaged properly even though I can see that the spring in not broken. (It is a very new machine.) Thank you.
I have a newer brother too. I suspect the case is put together much like a laptop or game console is these days. But before I would go that far... maybe try "flossing" it with a piece of light canvas or denim folded double. ;)

I have the same problem but I believe the answer is to purchase a new shuttle which is the part the bobbin sits in and is most likely scratched or damaged. The quote I got was 40-50 dollars

if thread is good quality you may have a sharp groove in your needle plate hole from needle breakage. if so, polish with emery tape.

Thread brekage can be caused by several things but start simple by taking off the needle plate then thoroughly clean the sewing mechanism and add a few drops of oil, then check the threading is correct. replace the needle. Always use quality threads and make sure that the thread is not to heavy for the size of the needle (it should pass easily through the needles eye). check that the needle hole in the plate is not bent or damaged and peppered with needle marks, a damaged plate will cause many problems. Finally, make sure that the tensions are not too tight this can be a major cause of thread breakage especially if poor quality thread is used. ( check thread by breaking it by hand, it should offer good resistance to breakage, if it breaks easily then discard it. hope this is useful, best of luck.
