Question about Garmin nuvi 780 GPS
I have a 3 week old nuvi 780. It has worked flawlessly until yesterday. On the way home the screen went to the "loading maps" phase. It stayed locked in that position. I unplugged the unit and then it would not start up. I then did a "re-set" by holding the power switch to the left for 8 seconds. The unit then powered up but would not go past the "loading maps" point. I then did a "clear" of the "private user data" by starting the unit and holding my finger on the lower right corner of the screen for 30 seconds. It asked me if I wanted to clear the "user data". I did. I then unhooked the unit from the car charger and then re-hooked it to the car charger. The unit then said it was "charging". I moved the power switch to the left and the unit powered off and came right back on with the "main menu". However, there are 'no maps" loaded and I can not navigate or imput any addresses. If I try it says "no data available". When I turn the unit off and then back on, it then goes back to the "loading maps" point and will not go from that. I have tried to hook the unit to my laptop, but the unit fails to communicate with my laptop.
I'm guessing I'm screwed at this point. Your thoughts.

You will need to erase a file from the units memory. Connect your GPS system to your computer; go to start then ‘My Computer’, and double click on your device file (mass storage system), there you will see a folder named ‘Garmin’.
In this folder are several different files, look for file named gmapsupp.img. Right hand click on this file and delete as this file is causing the maps to lock.

you can get the manual at www.garmin.com
you'll also need to get yourself a usb cable... the normal end for the computer and i believe the other end is called a mini b connector.
please take a moment to rate this solution.. thanks

There is a corrupt or missing file associated with the mapping thats causing it to lock up. When that file is missing, your Nuvi never gets to the routine for communicating with your PC. That's why your PC can't detect it.
I've fixed this problem before. The unit must be placed in PRE-BOOT mode, forcing Windows to recognize it and then using a specific program, reflash the firmware to an older version that doesn't care that the file is missing. The unit will then boot properly and you'll regain detection to the unit in Windows. Then you can repair/replace the missing files and then reflash back to the latest firmware.
Yes, its a pain and not an easy process to the novice.

SOURCE: nuvi 780 does not get past
The MSDN Traffic receiver does not need to be active to display maps. it is only needed for traffic reports, news, stocks, gas prices, Web Favorites, etc.
You may need to reload the maps into your GPS, unfortunately garmin stopped including the DVD in the box - BUT Garmin will send a DVD disk for free - just for asking. You will need your coupon codes however, to unlock the map.
I suggest you telephone Garmin and speak with a Customer Support Rep. to get a full explanation of what they can do for you.
