The Windows Defender software constantly scans your computer for threats such as spyware that may slow down your computer or try to steal personal information.

If the software wasn't installed properly or is conflicting with other programs running on your machine, Windows Defender may not work correctly.

To repair the software you either need to download the latest update available for the program, or you need to completely uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender.

Restart your computer's operating system.

Double-click the "Windows Defender" icon in the system tray at the lower-right end of the screen.

Click the question mark icon at the top of the Windows Defender screen and choose "Check for Updates."

Select "Continue" if you are running Windows Vista.

Wait for the updates to finish installing and click "Scan."

Click "Stop Scan" if the problem persists.

Click the question mark icon again and select "Exit Windows Defender."

Click "Yes" to confirm you want to close the software.

Open the "Start" menu screen and select "Control Panel." Select "Uninstall a Program" in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, or instead choose "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows XP.

Click the "Windows Defender" entry and select "Uninstall."

Choose "Yes" and restart the computer after the program is removed.

Navigate to the Windows Defender installation webpage (see Below).

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134

Click "Download" and double-click the Windows Defender installation file when it downloads to your hard drive.

Go through the onscreen installation instructions.

Open the "Start" menu and choose "All Programs."

Select "Windows Defender."

Click "Scan" to start a new scan for malicious software.

Thanks Brian!! This is a Gateway M-7301 and belongs to my daughter. It is now a backup to a Iphone, Ipad, and she has another dell laptop. This one was shorting out where the power supply comes in at and a guy my wife works with fixed it and put a new fan in. When I went to update everything, it kept popping up windows defender wasn't working. This was also causing Microsoft Security Essentials not to work right. I fought with it and tryed to uninstalled and reinstalled defender, but it wouldn't do it. So I went to do a total Vista reinstall and thats when found out the DVD player didn't read DVD's any more. I did the link you give me and it uploaded defender, but then said I didn't need to install it because it came with the Vista package. But it did do a defender scan and I just reinstalled MSE and it is scanning now. So hopefully it found the defender and will work ok now. I'll let you know. Thank you again!!

How do i fix error ox800106ba

Hi Anon,
The 0x800106ba error may occur after Windows Defender is updated due to the computer's inability to update the Windows Defender firewall. It may not have applicable permissions needed for the update, or it may not have the files necessary for updating itself.

The Fix

Set Windows Defender to Automatic - You can set the Windows Defender service to Automatic, Disabled or Manual. Setting it to automatic might solve the problem. Follow these steps:
  1. Click Start > type services in the Search box > click Services in the Programs list.
  2. If you are asked for a Password before you continue, then enter the password > click Continue.
  3. Double-click Windows Defender, and click Automatic in the start-up box > click OK.
Uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender - If the first procedure did not help resolve the problem, try un-installing and then reinstalling Windows Defender. Due to the fact that Windows Defender is a Windows component, we will use AppWiz to un-install it from the computer. Follow these steps:
  1. Press Windows Key + R > type appwiz.cpl > Press Enter
  2. Click Windows Defender > click Remove
  3. Follow the prompts to uninstall Windows Defender

Let me know how you go!

Sir pl tl me that whch antivirus is suitable for window 8

Windows 8 includes an automatically loaded updated version of Windows Defender
which is a full antivirus based on Microsoft Security Essentials.
(Windows Defender
for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 was only antispyware.)
So if you upgrade the protection
is automatic and is on by default at installation.

How do I turn on windows defender in win 8?

Hello Donna,
if you install a third-party anti-virus/anti-spyware software, Windows Defender turns off automatically by itself. So, before turning on Windows Defender, please be sure that you have completely uninstalled the other anti-virus solution from your computer. Now, get your computer restarted and Defender will be turned on by itself.

After restarting if Defender does not turn on automatically, go to Start menu, type Windows Defender and press enter to execute Windows Defender. If the status shows that you have to turn it on manually, do so and you are done.

Please let us know and we are here to help you!

Was the DVD damaged in so way? Does it show in Computer? Does it need driver? Which Gateway do you have? Windows Defender can be downloaded or fixed online.Do you have a Anti Virus that has turned off Windows Defender? I need to stop this message from cyber defender from poping up on my computer

  1. Run Windows Defender from Start Menu.
  2. Click on Tools button. windows-defender-tools.jpg
  3. Then click on Options link under “Tools and Settings” section. windows-defender-options.jpg
  4. Scroll down the “Options” page, and uncheck the check boxes of the following two settings: Use real-time protection (recommended) under “Real-time protection options”
disable-vista-windows-defender.jpg Use Windows Defender under “Administrator options”
uninstall-windows-defender.jpg Note that both options MUST be unchecked for the Windows Defender service in Windows Vista to be completely stopped. Else, only real-time protection is disabled.
  5. Click on Save button.
  6. A “Windows Defender is turned off” dialog message will appear, confirming that Windows Defender no longer runs. Once the Windows Defender is disabled, it’s sort of been uninstalled too, as any attempt to run the program will bring up “Windows Defender is turned off dialog window and unable to proceed to Windows Defender main window anymore. windows-defender-off.jpg

Hi,
If you use another anti virus/spy program like Norton Antivirus which i suspect you are as you are using Norton Internet Security then you may not need Windows Defender running at all. If you think that Windows Defender is the culprit stopping your Canon application from running then why don't you stop Defender from running.
Open the Windows Defender program, click on Tools->Options, select Administrator Options, and uncheck the "Use Windows Defender box". Confirm that you do indeed want to do this, click Close.
Restart your computer and try running the Canon application to see if it has helped.
If it has then all's well, if you want to run Windows Defender again just follow the above steps and re-check the "Use Windows Defender" box again.
If this does not work please post back.

Good luck.

How to disable Windows Defender

On your own head be it, Open w/defender then goto TOOLS - OPTIONS & uncheck all the boxes.
Then goto w/Firewall and ensure defender is not in use there. By disabling defender you are also interfearing with microsoft updates for other programes other than just defender. Remember vista is still a baby and is constantly being updated, new service packs are being created day by day to improve the "ultimate operating system" lol yeah right. I disabled mine last year and had nothing but trouble.firewall wouldnt let things in/out ,internet kept crashing.I eventually had to uninstall the nightmare that is NORTON anti virus. and find a program that would work well along side defender and the one i recomend is AVG. its free, easy and defender loves it.Defender is a major part to the whole windows operating system.I dont think you can fully disable it as you will find out eventually.
