Look for a mechanical switch that engages the lower drive mechanism.

Testimonial: "That was the trick. I knew it had to be something simple but I couldn't figure it out."
Computerized machines need to be serviced by an authorized sewing machine technician, preferably Elna.
Diving into this may cause more problems and end up costing you more money for repair.

While pressing the start/stop, reverse stitch and needle position buttons, turn on the power to display the screen
for the touch panel adjustment mode.
2. While pressing the start/stop button, touch the touch panel at the positions marked by crosses (+) in order from 1 to
(When touching the touch panel, use an object with a rounded tip such as a pencil or matchstick. Never use a
hard or sharp-pointed object.)
If the buzzer sounds once when cross number 5 is touched, the adjustment has been made correctly.
If the buzzer sounds twice when cross number 5 is touched, an error has occurred. In this case, touch the
crosses on the touch panel again in order from 1 to 5.
Never press the thread cutter button during this time. (Doing so may cause a malfunction.)
3. Turn the power off, then on again and check that the screen display and the touch panel positions are aligned

That's a tough call, parts can be pretty high to fix a machine. Have looked around to price out a new embroidery machine, Janome makes some very nice one in that price range. I'd try ebay there is one which is missing the foot control and hoops for $250.00 just search Brother Pacesetter PC-8200 this may be the ticket you already have the foot control and hoops.
Best of luck
