Question about Porter Cable Cable 135 PSI, 15 Gal. Oil - Free Horizontal Compressor CPF4515

1 Answer

Trips breaker after a few seconds of run time.

After many hard years of solid service my Porter Cable air compressor modl cpf6020 has its first problem. after a few seconds of running it will trip the breaker. the problem is not the breaker or the curuit. I have even tried running it on a 30A curcuit using my generator and although that will gain a few more seconds of run time, it still trips the breaker. I had the capacitors tested. the run capacitor was bad so i replaced it, and replaced the start capacitor just for fun so both are new. it seems to me that the start capacitor is not being cut out of the curcuit once the motor is running but i dont know how to test that theory. i have tested all wiring connections and all are good. the Centrifugal switch seems to be in working order (all the moving parts move correctly) but I dont see how the Centrifugal switch physically interupts the curcuit. directly below the switch is a plastic part that 1 wire from each capacitor connects too and a flexible metal component that is the "switch". does anyone have a pic or digram of how this switch works so i can make sure its not broken or missing parts? any help or ideas much appreciated!!!!

Start capacitors are disconnected when it is reach a full RPM.
Use a AVR tester - measure AC voltage across capacitors. It shall be off in a few seconds after is running.
If not - centrifugal switch or its components are problem.

SOURCE: I have a C2150 4 gal compressor from Porter cable

Try to use a higher amperage extension cord.
This unit is rated for 15 amps. It should be able to run on a 20 amp circuit unless there is voltage drop due to small wiring. Try an air conditioner extension and let us know the result.

SOURCE: Trying to wire up my new air compressor, need help with wires.

If you are trying to connect power lines directly to the motor then stop what you are doing, I advise you refer to the owners manual for correct wiring of the compressor. I would highly advise that you seek the service of a professional to hook it up. otherwise you could damage the equipment or worse yourself.

SOURCE: how to remove muffler intake from Porter Cable CPF6020-1 air compressor

To remove the air filter intake muffle you will need to remove the 4 screws that hold the head on to the pump.
There is a O-ring under the head you will want to put a little vasoline on before you reassemble the head back to the pump.

The new muffler kit should be the KK-4981

check the amps requirements for the compressor, it should be at least 20 amp breaker without much else on it running at the same time.See what else goes off when breaker trips

Porter cable cffn25 won't run. Trips breaker

The little compressors were not built for continuous duty. The pump probably seized, or the motor burned up, or both.

A number of things can cause this. A sit worked before !
Basically:

Engines get older and can't hold HP which causes the rpm to slow and voltage dip, this causes a current increase and trips.

Breakers also get weaker especially if they trip a few times
HVAC and compressors pull approx 6 times the current to start as they do to run, once they have run a while, they build up higher head pressures which cause harder starting and more current draw, hence the breaker tripping.

It's hard to pin point which is the actual issue, but these all contribute.

The curcuit breaker on the motor. Probably a little round button that's about the size of a screw head.

Hi hbkopen31...
Your problem sounds like it is the motor giving a problem.

Unhook the belt from the compressor and run the motor by itself...check the compressor to make sure it is not dragging the motor too much making the amps go up and tripping the breaker..
If the motor runs with the belt off of the compressor, then let it run for at least an hour, then put the belt back on and try it again...if it trips again, then replace/rebuild the motor as it is faulty.
Also check the motor capacitor sometimes they fail..
If the motor still trips the breaker after removing the compressor belt..replace/repair the motor as it is faulty.
