for this kind of unit HTS8100 that comes with htd7001 it can only play some ipod. for instance if you want to play music you can use ipod nano but if you want to play video you need to use ipod 4th and 5th generation. because there's compatible issue with this unit because ipod was released after this unit (hts8100) was released

If your capable of replacing components yourself - Change capacitor C19 (33uF 63v) its on the board next to the display.
This cap goes leaky/dry after time, as there is a lot of ripple on it. This is what causes the display to go dim or blank. changing this cap brings the display back on most cases. Also maybe change the other capacitors near it while you are there..
