My ICOM 706MKIIG will not power up? Since ICOM does not support this model any longer, is there anyone who knows how to fix this unit?

    Rebecca,

The ICOM 706MKIIG has a couple of rubber cushion pads under the PLL board and the glue on these pads if subjected to moisture will in time turn the glue to acid and this will eat the circuit traces under the pads clean off the board. I have fixed more than a half dozen of the 706 radios that these pads had totally dissolved the circuit traces that came in contact with the glue. You will need to remove the PLL board to check these pads and take them off the board, clean off the residue and check with a good magnifying glass and also ohm across the traces to verity that the traces are ok. Bet you will find a trace near the +5 volt regulator ate in two! Good luck with your repair. 73, Dennis

Yes, I do. They are not easy to work on, and depending on what caused the problem, they can be expensive to repair. Take the covers off and check the fuse. If it is open (the wire inside is broken), replace it with another of the SAME value. A larger value will just cost you more in repair costs! If the fuse blows, then your best to take it to a service tech.

How do you recalibrate the SWR meter in an Icom 706Mkiig radio. I changed the filter board and it seems off now.

Hello,

You will need the service manual to be able to do this and you will also need to purchase a 150 ohm carbon film resistor (no wire wound resistors) to simulate a 3:1 SWR to reset the onboard auto tuner base line for SWR. I believe you may find a service manual on BAMBA's website to download for free. The auto tuner is factory set to work up to a 3:1 SWR before it gives up trying to match the antenna. So, this is a resistor you will need or make up a 150 ohm load using a combo of resistors as long as they are not wire wound types. 73, Dennis

Polarity reverse problem in icom 706 mkiig

Quite a few things can go wrong in this situation. There is an internal fuse that can blow, but the first problem will be a rather large diode that is directly across the DC power input. Reverse polarity will cause this to short, and it usually stays shorted. It will need to be replaced. Then, you should look for open traces from the +12V line to the fuse holder, and the collector of the HF output transistor. If you do not see close to ZERO ohms when your leads are attached, then you have a trace blown off the board.

Depending on how long you left the reversed power on, and if you replaced the inline fuses with a larger value, repair cost can run you from $2 to several hundred, just for the parts! I would take it to someone that knows how to work on this radio. It is not an easy radio to work on.

ICON 706MKIIG Radio no power up

Check the internal fuse. It may have blown. Other than that, I would suggest you take it to someone that works on these radio's. They are very difficult to work on if one isn't proficient in working with surface mount devices.

POWER

Email Whistler at info@whistlergroup.com for info on that model. Do you think its the power cord or the jack in the unit itself?

ICOM GP-360ML GPS Receiver

I had this problem about a year ago. If all you need is the firmware update they will update it at no charge and they told me if it needs repairs they most likely will not have the parts becaus it is a discontinued model. They also said they did checked it and found no other problems. Sent it in to Icom:
Icom America
2380 116th Ave NE
Bellevue WA 98004
They did the firmware update and sent it back to me free of charge. It works great now and my chart cards work great.
