Like I said originally, whenI put either a CD or DVD into the driv, it spins up, the lights blink, but nothing happens. When I use Windows Explorer to check the drive the page is blank just like it is when I explore it without a disk in it. Device manager says the drive is working properly. None of the Windws XP trouble shooting steps work. I haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling the diver yet.

I don't know what els to tell you.

    ulcimd1,

You are the man, the best. I put the cleaning disk in and nothing happened differently that with any other disk. I decided to try letting it clean a few times before giving up, so I would eject and reinsert the disk and by the 3rd of fourth try it was reading just as good as it ever did. It hasn't worked this good for years!

    Thank you again!

If I had just looked a it I would have seen how easy it was to clean. I think I probably could have just wiped it with a lint free cloth or maybe even a coffe filter. I just learned about using coffe filters most places you woulduse paper towels but want it to be lint free.

I THINK THOUGH THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND USING A Q TIP AND ALCOHOL THOUGH BECAUSE ANY KIND OF PAPER PRODUCTS CAN SCRATCH LENSES -- THAT IS THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE FROM RUINING GLASS EYEGLASSES, MUCH LESS PLASTIC ONES.

    THANKS AGAIN!

Clean the lens on your drive. The hardware is working, but the computer can't see the information. Probably a dirty lens...You can buy a special lens cleaning disc that you just stick in the drive and run. If that doesn't work, carefully use isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip to gently clean the lens.

I learned that lesson from months of frustration...I have a DVD-RAM/CD-RW combo drive that would read and burn CDs perfectly, but when I put a blank DVD in the computer would just get confused. (Needless to say, so did I.) I eventually decided to clean the lens and I have had no problem since. I'm glad I could help you out!

I formated my Dell latitude D600 and installed windows vista. As a result, the wireless lan stopped working. I have tried running different drivers to re-instal the wireless yet it has refused to...

Dell does not provide Vista drivers for the D600 because it is too old.
(See: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&os=WW1&osl=en&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&catid=-1&impid=-1)

I see two options:
Purchase an add-on Vista-compatible wireless adapter (USB or PCMICIA).
Go back to XP. It will run better than Visa on the D600.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Function keys F1 thru F12 don't work

Keyboard might have gone bad. Try hooking up a external keyboard and see if they work. If they don't then you have a motherboard issue. If they do then it is a keyboard issue. If you lucky it is just a keyboard then you can get one here for 20 bucks.
