My 3 year old mp780 worked fine until about a month ago. I changed a cartridge and it started showing "wrong cartridge" message. I've done everything I can think of from leaving it unplugged for 24 hours, etc. It did print a couple times but then the error message came back. My computer tech thinks it is because I am not using canon original cartridges, but I have been using these same cartridges from 123 inkjet for the last 3 years and they have always worked until now. The tech also said maybe to get a new printer head and see if that fixed the problem. I haven't found a replacement for less than $68.00 and I'm hesitant to change it for that price. I may be better off to just get a new printer and throw this one out. Give me your input.

Remove the black cartridge and soak it with an alcohol free window cleaner soaked paper towel let it sit on the towel for a good thirty minutes then wipe clean and put back in printer run nozzle check if necessary.
Remove the print head and cartridges.Unplug machine for 30 min.
Repower and reseat head and ink do a head alignment.
If this does not correct it may require service.
Ink Cartridges are the BCI6 and 3 series correct?
If using CLI8's and they are flashing red you have a bad cartridge or it is in the wrong location. If so Canon will replace the bad cartridge.
I have a canon pixma 780. It was working fine then I had a paper jam and message "Cartridge jammed" I removed paper with no difficulty-piece was not torn. Now it will not print at all Paper feeds through but no printing in any colour
I have two Pixma 780's. After getting the "wrong cartridge" error one day when I turned it on, (I knew it was the right cartridge) I tried switching ink tanks, and the print head cartridge several times between the two printers. the problem followed the black print head cartridge, so I am guessing I need a new one. From that experience, I would recomend swithing the print cartridge if you get this error. Does anyone know how to do a reset on this machine? A Canon tech told me once, but I lost the info.
This may seem to be a stupid question but, is it the right cartridge?
Is it a genuine Canon cartridge or an aftermarket replacement that "suits" your printer? If the latter, try getting a genuine Canon cartridge and install that and see if you get the same error message.
If you still get the same message, take it to a repairer and get them to check it out for you.
