Question about Jenn-Air 703650 203650 Downdraft Cooktop Range Stove Parts Burner Control Switch

Indicator light always on

The indicator light is always on. The two electric burners, the grill, and the fan seem to operate normally and I found no loose wiring inside the area where the switches are. It is an old unit.

What are the chances of the indicator light going bad and staying on versus one of the burner switches always sending an erroneus messages that it's ON when it's really OFF?

  • Joseph Jan 05, 2013

You are most likely correct. Recently the rear (larger) burner quit working so its switch will be replaced.

It really looks like a welded contact point in one of the burner switches going to the indicator light circuit. If you can, open the panel and lookk for shorts going to the indicator light.

You are most likely right, and thanks for replying. Since last posting the rear (larger) burner became inop and its switch will be replaced.

The problem turned out to be a defective receptacle for the coil element. Once that was replaced all is well.

Seems like burners flames dont get big

Paula, you're propane tank may be almost empty or the OPD Valve in the tank has locked up your grill regulator. To test this theory, turn the propane tank valve OFF and disconnect the hose. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose. Turn the tank valve ON VERY, VERY SLOWLY (slow motion, slow). Once it's completely open, light the burner farthest from the tank first and turn it to high. Does the flame height appear to be normal? If so, light the remaining burner(s) the same way. If all the flame heights are now normal, you solved the problem Just remember to alway trun the tank valve ON very very slowly. If that didn't solve the problem, you need to replace the grills regulator/hose assembly. You can purchase it at any home center or hardware store that sells gas grills and accessories. Just take your old one wih you for comparison purposes.

Hope this helped you to get back up and grilling!

Burners run cool when set on high, when all but one burner is off, the single burner opporates correctly. Grill worked fine before.

There have been issues lately with the way regulators are not drawing gas out of the cylinders properly, and how some of the newer grills are not heating properly.

The issue with them not heating properly goes back (usually, from just what I have observed) to the position of the gas knobs at the time the cylinder valve is opened. On some grills, if the gas knobs are open when the cylinder valve is opened, the burners will not get the maximum amount of gas to all burners, but the performance of one burner is enhanced if the others are turned off, and this sounds like what's got you.

Turn the gas cylinder valve to the off position, and bleed the gas pressure down at the burners. Close the burner valves. Slowly crack open the tank valve, and work it slowly to full open. With the grill lid open, select and light one burner. If it operates properly, light the other burners. If the first burner does not operate properly, repeat the procedure. If you cannot operate your grill like it is supposed to, the issue may fall to the regulator. If the regulator is an older style, it may not actually be fully compatible with some newer cylinders. This seems to be a newer phenomenon, and seems to be found with the type of cylinders that are swapped for a refill. If this is your case, you will need to upgrade to the newer regulator.

Best regards, --W/D--

Got a new tank of gas. Can't light burner. Have disconnected hose and left burners on high for five minutes. The Genesis lit easily before. Have run into this problem it seems before. Can't find the...

Do every thing as you did before, except when you turn the tank valve on, do it VERY, VERY SLOWLY. Turn the burners back off, wait a couple of minutes and then light each burner one at a time starting with the one farthest from the tank. That should solve your problem

Remember to always turn the tank valve on VERY, VERY SLOWLY after it has been turned off for any reason. If you turn the tank valve on as you normally dis,it will lock up the grill regulator.

That should solve your problem.

Grill seems to flair up, doe not always light with 1st press of the ignitor(or 2nd, 3rd...) and then it does start and a gas filled burst of heat erupts

most grills do not lite on the first press of the igniter so this is a common situation, The best way to prevent this is make sure everything around the igniter is clean especially the burner. I've seen brand new grills do the for their entire service life so don't be discouraged if you can't correct the problem. Get a extended lighter and lite the grill manually, lite the lighter hold it next to the burner then turn the burner control on, Always lite a grill with the hood or cover open!!

Exhaust fan comes on when burner turned on

The left side is set for your grill. There is apparently a switch under the left side top / front of the cooktop. The aeration tray has a prong on one end that fits into a hole in the front end of the burner basin and activates the switch which stops the fan from coming on when using the burners and allows the fan to run when using the grill. Try switching sides with the aeration trays as one might make better contact than the other.

Front burner on grill won't adjust from high

Here is a couple of things to do.

Make sure your tank is filled.
Straighten Fuel hose, so it is not bent or kinked.
Does your front burner light with a match? If it does light then check the Crossover Ignition System.

Also, It could be the way the unit is turn off.

Try following thses steps, this will help to reset the excess flow safety device.
Turn all burner control knobs and the cylinder valve OFF.
Disconnect the regulator from the cylinder. Turn burner control knobs to HIGH. Wait at least 1 minute. Turn burner control knobs OFF. Reconnect the regulator to the cylinder. turn cylinder valve on slowly. Then go ahead an light your grill.
