it defenitely has to placed exactly where it was. from the description it is unable to read the correct temp from inside the fridge hence its consequently making the compressor on for too long causing the fridge to freeze.

What tempature should my 1988 22re run

operating temp should be from 195 to 215 degrees.
colder than 195 and the fuel eccon will be low.
above 220 either there is low water flow ( plugged Radiator) or poor air flow accross radiator.
At 260 you are too hot.
a stuck closed thermostst will run hot
a stuck open thermostat will run cold at high speed (50 mph)

Check the seal around the door itself this may be worn or detatched. This will cause warm air to get into the appliance and freeze inside thus making you freezer look the the arctic.

If it is an electronic thermostat it could be that the engineer has changed the board but not the sensor which reads the temp. If it is a mechanical thermostat it may be hes fitted the wrong type.It could also be that the system is short of refrigerant and the actual refrigerant charge is not getting all the way to the thermoststs sensor to switch it off, the back wall of the fridge should be frosted at least 3/4 of the way down and not just forming in a small part of the fridge.

Coils behind the freezer continue to "freeze up"

You have a problem in the defrost system There are three components: Defrost timer, defrost thermostst or terminator, and defrost heater. One of them has failed which is causing the evaporator to ice.
