Question about Brother MFC 8820D All-In-One Laser Printer
I had the same issue. There is a small tab on the inside of the top lid. This tab goes up and down when you open and close the lid. Tap it a few times and it will reset.

SOURCE: doc cover open
Yes there is and I know your problem have a look at the left hinge on lid that you lift to put down an original for copying, it will be breaking apart, the switch is black in that same corner on doc feeder base, as the hinge breaks apart the doc feed lifts in that corner causing "doc cover open" cause that switch no longer gets pushed in when lid is shut
Dodgy repair - tape switch closed, but doc feeder will not work properly/can use glass.
Repair - Easy removal of three screws and replacing 20buck hinge bought from brother dealer...part no.LE8731001 Hinge assy left.
Now that's FIXYA!

Look at back of machine and at your new hinge, note the screw hole, if you undo both of those on the back of the printer, entire doc feed will come up and out, BECAREFULL just lift A LITTLE is enough to enable hinge base to be free of sockets (many cables attached) and place doc unit slightly sideways on copy glass to enable yourself access to 3 screws that hold hinge.

SOURCE: mfc-7220 Back Cover Open
This one made me crazy, but I finally figured it out. Turn the machine around so that you are facing the back. Open the back cover. Pull down the second smaller roller cover inside the machine. If you look closely at the second smaller cover, on the right hand side (closer the the inside of the machine), is a very thin round piece of plastic that is only half the length of the smaller cover. There are 2 thin plastic tabs attached to either end of this round piece of plastic. Gently shift this over so that the 2 plastic tabs can now go into the space provided for them. I had to move mine over only 1/4 inch.

You need a new hinge so the cover will sit down properly, or paper will jam anyway, but it sounds like there is still a scrap of paper on one of the sensors inside the ADF, you need to look with a flashlight down thru where the paper goes and also look up thru the slot with the ADF lifted.
