Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

3 Answers

Inspiron 1501 will not power from know good AC adapter.

My inspiron 1501 will run perfectly off of a charge battery ( I have a friend with one).

The AC adapter will not power the laptop or charge the battery. I have tried a friends know good AC adapter and have the same problem.

It is not the socket. I used a voltage tester on the mother board to make sure the power was getting to it and it is.

I think it is the motherboard but I hate to spend the $189.99 for a new mother board from dell.

I am really looking for some sort of work around, a way to fix the motherboard or to chage the battery without the laptop or something.

    Thats for the help.

I did put the good battery in my laptop and neither ac adapter would charge it. When either of the ac adapters are hooked up it show that it is running off of the battery. When I put my battery in my friends laptop it showed it was charging with both my ac adapter and his.

When I hooked my ac adapter to his computer the adapter worked fine. I have verified that both my battery and my ac adapter work fine. The problem is in my laptop but it isn't the socket.

When I took it apart the first time I never say a fuse. I have looked online and no where can I find anything about a Inspiron having a fuse.

I looked again for a fuse and looked everywhere. There doesn't seem to be any fuses. Everything that looked like it might be a possible fuse I checked for continuity and found nothing.

The next thing to try is to put your friend's good battery in your laptop and see it your AC adapter will charge it. If so, the problem is your battery. This can be verified by putting your battery in his laptop and you'll probably find it doesn't get charged on that one either. Since you verified the charging socket isn't the problem, I doubt that putting in a new motherboard will fix it.
Also, check the plug that comes from the wall into your adapter. I have experienced that those may be the culprit and the adapter itself is still good. What luck to have a friend with the same laptop to help diagnose!
Batteries only have a certain amount of life and charges they can take before crapping out. If you get 3 years from one, consider yourself fortunate. Let me know the results and we'll take it from there.

Well, we're narrowing it down. As the next post states, see if you can locate the fuse. You can find spec and diagram manuals online at support.dell.com that are great for this kind of tinkering. If the fuse turns out to be good, it looks like your final step is the motherboard replacement.

Hi rogertooley,

I had a similar problem with two SONYs, it turned out on one there was a blown SMD fuse 4A, very near close by the DC power plug.

On the other the Power Management Board was bad and needed a replacement.

If you already went to the trouble of opening the laptop, see if you can locate a SMD fuse and check it. If there is none or if the fuse is ok, then see if you can locate the DC power management board and see if you can find a failed power mos on it.

Well, I had no schematics for my laptop too, just look for a component similar to what I highlighted in the picture. Please keep in mind, this shall serve as an example as it was taken of a sony laptop.

    Hope this helps you.

    Good Luck

try to remove the battery from the computer, after unplugging it, plug in the AC adapter without the battery and check if it will turn on. if it doesnt then 2 possible reason
1. the AC adapter is busted, you can try a known good Dell AC adapter. if its still now working with a know good AC adapter then
2. its the motherboard that needs to be replaced.
Hope this help

Will the power cord for the Dell Inspiron 1501 fit the Vostro 1500?

AC adapter for both systems belong to D-Family 65 W lead-free AC adapter So you can use the Ac adadpter Note :- The Vostro 1500 discrete version requires the 90 W AC adapter. Without it, you will receive an error message indicating the wrong AC adapter type, the CPU speed will downgrade, and the battery will not charge.

My dell inspiron 1501 won't charge when it's plugged in it works for awhile then it seem to loose contact and the battery runs down fast.

Hello

It would appear that there is a motherboard issue with this model laptop from Dell. Below is a link to the discussion thread for the problem you described. Unfortunately, there is no current solution for this issue - short of replacing the laptop.

I had the battery not recognized on boot up. then

the Dell AC adapter has a sensing pin so the bios can determine the wattage of the adapter. If the system cannot ID the adapter, the battery charger circuit is disabled. You'll need a functional DELL ac adapter to get the battery to charge

Can I use ther Targus Adaptor for Inspiron 1525

On the long term, a power adapter with a bigger amperage can damage battery and battery charger.

Better to get an adapter with same specs as the 65/70W one , or an original replacemant:

Dell inspiron 1501 work fine turn off last night now wont turn on

You mentioned trying a different battery, try a different AC adapter.

When plugging in the ac adapter to the wall, see if the POWER LED comes on on the adapter, then when you connect it to the computer, see if the LED stays on.

If the issue occurs with both AC adapters (No battery installed) then the motherboard has failed. If one ac adapter works but the other doesn't then the adapter is bad

Replacement battery for Dell Inspiron 1501 won't charge

If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
