The bar is halfway up and I can feel the fingers just above the ice chambers. It's been in that position for a few days now. I've tried killing power to the fridge to see if it would recycle itself but no joy. I cleared out the ice as best I could but I'm wondering if I need to remove the icemaker altogether.

OK, lets do this. Manual Cycle Initiation The icemaker ejection cycle is initiated by the thermostat. If, however, the icemaker is not ejecting, it will be necessary to manually initiate an ice ejection cycle. After removing the front cover, turn the motor shaft (small gear) 1/2 turn in the counterclockwise direction. This will rotate the cam enough to transfer the hold switch and provide power to the motor. If the thermostat is closed at this time, the heater will likewise be energized and the icemaker will complete the cycle. After manual initiation, carefully feel the bottom of the mold. It should begin to heat. If it doesn't, either the thermostat has not yet closed or the heater is open. Before manually initiating a cycle, check the position of the ejector arm. Assuming the problem is in the icemaker, the position of the ejector arm will give you an indication of the failed component. If the ejector blades are still in the home position (9 o'clock) the thermostat is most likely at fault. If the ejector blades stopped between the 9 and 10 o'clock positions, the hold switch is most likely at fault. An ejector at the 4 o'clock position normally indicates an open heater. Any position other than the 9 or 4 o'clock positions may indicate motor problems or broken, stripped or missing parts in the housing. To begin harvest turn drive gear counterclockwise, do not use ejector blade to start cycle. Post back your results.

I don't see a small gear. Only a big one with red letters saying not to turn it manually. Can you describe what I should be seeing a little better?

I'll tell ya what, if you go to my website athttp://appliancecafe.com and select the repair forum from the top of the page, signup for the forum, go to the service manual area, ice makers, and you can download the complete service manual for the whirlpool ice maker. Go to page 9 you will have the info I sent you along with the pictures and all. Let me know if you have a problem getting the manual.

  • Stephen Schaefle Nov 28, 2012

OK. By looking at the manual I could see where the gear was supposed to be - up and to the left of the large gear. Mine is covered by an unremoveable cover, so that meant I had to do what the red letters told me NOT to do - turn the big gear manually. I grasped it in my right hand and turned it clockwise (you said the small gear should go counterclockwise, so...) As soon as I did, the motor started turning the gear and I heard water go into the mold a few seconds later. Once that happened the metal arm fell to the down position. Problem solved, eh? Thanks for all your help!!

We have a 7 year old Kenmore Elite trio. The ice maker continues to make ice, but won't dispense it. It appears that the plastic ice shut off arm is stuck in the up position. How can I get it unstuck

Most arms on ice makers are metal.
You might have to take the food out of the freezer temporarily and put the food in an ice chest and disconnect the refrigerator and let it unfreeze the plastic arm.

Just get a new ice maker on cheap on ebay since the heating element (for ice removal) on tray will cost more than a new maker!

Have you tried adding a bit of water to the ice mold? Is their an ice cube stuck in the ice mold? If you have an ice cube stuck in there just heat the im with a hair dryer till the cube clears and fingers go around. Listen to see if you hear water going into the mold.
