I would suggest that you contact Garmin for a replacement if you still have it under warranty. If your computer can still detect the Garmin when plugged in you might still be able to update the firmware but as you said it does not turn on then that would be a remote possiblity so it would be best to have it replaced if it is under warranty

You can send it to Garmin for the flat rate repair fee of $79 dollars. I would recommend getting the new eTrex Legend H with the high sensitivity receiver if you want a similar model. It's sat reception will blow the prior version out of the water and has 24mb of memory rather than the 8mb it used to have.
The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.
Yes, this problem has been caused by the launch of a new satellite earlier this year. As soon as your unit gets a fix from the new satellite, it causes this problem. Simple immediate fix: disable WAAS in the setup. Permanent fix: go to Garmin website and update your unit's software and it will fix this temporary problem.
