I have a splendid PowerShot S1 IS (three yers old) to-day taking shots in the snow I found the optical viewfinder and monitor turning blue and flashing after taking three or four shots. On return home in the house all was well.Could this have been the effect of extreme cold.I am 82 years of age and Not a technophobe !!Many thanks John Cronk

Well....that is not extreme cold....that is a defective inverter.

That happen because of defective inverter/LCD/backlight.

Either the inverter had momentarily failed, or the backlight is starting to fail, also a ribbon cable that was not well connected can do the same.

    but effectively.

When LCDs are cold, the pixels are very slow to react, but the screen does not turn blue.

I fix this stuff and I have never seen an LCD turning blue because of cold, however, if this is possible must be reported on the Internet, try too look on google I don't think you find any evidence on this.

If the "yes it is cold" is true, a link to corroborate the assertion should be provided.

Turn on auto focus and when you are taking a shot let Auto-Focus adjust the blurry image in the viewfinder beforeyou take a shot. If you do not know how to do it please let me know and I will give you detailed instructions.

Viewfinder/lens problems

Alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pics in a digital camera. Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Walmart sells these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance. Really, you'll slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

And yes, your camera's optical viewfinder is off by a couple inches from what's show in the LCD. Take a look at the front of your camera. This offest is equal to the distance between the other end of the optical viewfinder, and your camera's lens. This should only be a problem for close up pictures. Recommend leaving your LCD on and using that to center your pictures. If using rechargeables, it shouldn't be a problem.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
