Hi Ray,

According to the Western Digital support page the drive will need reformatting for use with MacOS X Leopard (10.5). The relevant page is here http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/5730#

There is a direct link to the WD Mac update here http://community.wdc.com/t5/News-Announcements/Software-Update-Mac-WD-SmartWare-Updater-Version-1-3-3-8-6-14-11/m-p/206306#M181

How do I format my WD Elements SE 500GG for Snow Leopard for a MacBook?

To format the drive for MAC OSX

1. Connect the drive to your computer.

2. Open Disk Utility. (Applications folder > Utilities folder > Disk Utility). Select the hard drive in the left hand column and click on the Erase tab.

3. In the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended *.

4. Once you have selected the format and have named the drive, click on Erase. You will be presented with a 'Are you Sure' dialog.

5. The drive will format and upon completion will be available for use.

Note: * For the best performance, we recommend using Mac OS Extended format. However, if you will be transferring files between a Windows system and a Macintosh, format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT32) or use a program such as MediFour

I have a Western Digital Passport Essential 320GB to back up my PC. Now, I don't know why, the file wdsmartware.exe doesn't run and appears the message "WDDM service no running". Can you help me...

You must restart the WDDM Service. To do this you must be logged in as an administrator:

1. Press the Win Key (between left "ctrl" and "alt) + "R". That will open the Run Dialogue Box.

2. Type "services.msc"

3. Scroll down to WDDM

4. Right click ----> Properties

5. Verify startup type is "Automatic"

6. Click "Start" ---> "Apply ----> "OK"

I use a Mac G3 Wallstreet Powerbook with OSx. Does OSX talk SCSI?

It will only read devices connected unless there is a problem with the scsi port. Also be aware early scsi needed termination to be read.

Can I use WD Elements 320 to transfer data between macbook and imac?

WD Elements 320 needs to be formatted on OSX before use. The instructions did not come with the product - instead a CD was included in the box with a program called memeo - which was useless. I found out how to format and partition the disk - using disk utility in applications on the Mac. I can't think why you bother with this service if you just wait a few hours and then ask me how to do it! Thanks for nothin

Hi, In order to use this model under a mac OS you will need a software called macam, find the list of compatible devices here: http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php
The download link here: http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/downloads.html
Please note that this model has been designed for a windows environnement and macam might not provide the full functionality of your device.
Thanks and have a nice day J -

WD mybook world won't work on mac?

Window and OSX - fun and joy.
Since you formatted a 1TB drive and it works fine in Windows, I have to concluded the the drive was formatted NTFS.
Here is the issue in a nutshell, OSX supports reading NTFS but have very limited write cababilities.
If you want both Windows and OSX to have full access to an external drive you should format it FAT32. The only issue then is that under normal conditions a FAT32 drive has a maximum size of 32GB.
I would partition the drive to have 1 or more FAT32 partitions and then have the rest of the drive NTFS.

Is the OSX version correct or should it be 10.3. If it is actually 1.3 it would mean you have the OSX Server edition that originally came out in 1999 and it may not have very good USB support - version 1.2 would only support 1 USB device.
