SOURCE: Engine won't run unless the choke is on - Deere 14SB Push Mower

It's starving for fuel. When you push the throttle all the way forward it closes the choke. You took it apart but you probably didn;t get all the junk out of it. Easy fix is to put some SeaFoam into the tank and run it. This cleans all deposits and debris from the jets. I have used this stuff and put it in the tank and start the engine and sit back and let it run. After about 5 minutes the engine will smooth out and run fine.

SOURCE: Honda 160cc mower engine starts and dies.

Your carbeurator is crudded up. Get a can of aerosol carbeurator cleaner at any auto parts store. Remove the air filter and spray two squirts of cleaner into the air intake. Start the engine and keep it running by squirting more carb. cleaner into the air intake. WIth a little patience you will clean your carb. and solve your problem.

1987 Kawasaki GPZ 1000 RXv will not rev past 3000 RPM

Hi, Mick and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a cursory reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.

having to use the choke indicates a problem in the induction system
possible blocked main jet in the carby, inlet gasket leak, loose carby, fuel line blockage , dirty fuel , blocked air filter
because it runs , the distributor is the last thing to check or it would not be sparking at the plugs

Murray 10/30 riding mower has spark but not firing, with a puffing sound out the air filter when trying to start it.

Gavin, the symptoms indicate that the intake valve is stuck open, it could be that the exhaust is also stuck, but normally when an engine sets up, only one stem corrodes and gets stuck. It matters little though which one is stuck, you will still need to have a valve job.

1998 Craftsman riding mower, 16 horse Kohler engine, engine starts won't stay running, won't run more than 10 seconds. Appears to have good spark, checked fuel filter and supply is good. Adding gas...

The exhaust valve opening at the beginning of the compression stroke is designed to make the engine easy to crank.
Since you know the exh. valve is opening, it means you have torn into the engine (maybe ?) because you don't really see it any other way. Did you put it back together correctly ?
IF an engine has spark, proper timing, compression and fuel it will run.
Since yours runs for a bit, I say you have a carb/fuel delivery problem.
