I've called ILO help desk - they were basically useless. Not only do they offer repairs to the products they sell, but they can't give me a definitive answer as to where I can go to get replacement parts. They said the manufacturer is based out of Taiwan. That's all the information they had, and suggested that I do a Google search - which turned up nothing.

Meant to say that they DO NOT offer repairs for their products

How do I get those numbers - where are they found?

I am still waiting on the guy at the repair shop to call me back w/ the laser assembly numbers - should be some time this afternoon,

  • David Adams Jun 07, 2007

The repair guy called & said that I would have to take to to where I bought it, which is Wal-Mart. I told the guy that it should be marked on the unit & he kept insistant that Wal-Mart should have that information.

Is this information that you are refering to, the laser assembly, is it actually on the drive unit inside the componant?

  • David Adams Jun 11, 2007

I checked the tray - there were no numbers to be found anywhere on the tray. The only numbers that I could find were on the barcode sticker on the back of the machine. They were:

    s/n: 602441010062
    F: wmja1152
    D: G2B9 HI-POT OK

    Manucatured 10/04

There's no need to replace the lens, that's the beauty of the iLo. It just uses a standard IDE DVD +R drive. You can replace the whole drive with another drive, even if it's a different brand or model, just like you would in a PC.

Have you asked WalMart where they send their units for service, or look in the owners manual for the iLo contact number service,it should be listed there.

Ok MAYBE, just MAYBE, if I get all of the numbers that are on the laser assembly, I can cross reference it to another manufacturer, as I am sure as the day is new, that this manufacturer of this DVD recorder does not make this laser assy. themselfs, but gets it from a supplyer

They will be on the laser assembly, on the sides, on the bottom, and should be a brand name there also, if not, then just numbers. We will see if we can cross reference these numbers to a different but the same pickup assembly

    OK cool

No it is on the bottom or on the side of the laser assy.

No there should be numbers on the inside of the machine, on the laser assy. If there are none, I'm afraid the unit cannot be repaired

Where can I buy a digital tv tuner to replace the analog tuner in a DVDRHD04

Generally recording machines fitted with an analogue tuner can only continue to be used to record digital tv by using a digital set-top box.
It would not be practical or economic to remove the internal analogue tuner and replace it with a digital tuner unless the person is a highly skilled and experienced repairer.

Digital set-top boxes are available from all sorts of outlets at all sorts of prices. Many surplus boxes can be found at boot sales, garage or yard sales or charity shops at very low prices.

Most boxes have the minimum of connections and often offer only a scart output but some of the older, more expensive and usually better quality boxes also contained a UHF tuner in a similar way to the old vhs recorders so even older tv sets could be used with digital even though no scart input was fitted.

Will not play back disc recorded on this machine

That's an interesting one. As I understand it, you recorded and played back the same DVD's and they worked on your ilo when created. Now, after a period of time, these same DVD's don't play on this unit.

From personal experience, I know that these drives do change over time and, whether the laser ages or alignment changes, they have trouble creating DVD's that work on other players or reading DVD's that they once had no problems with.

My suggestion would be to try playing the original DVD's in another player. If that works then chances are your ilo's writer drive has changed over time. In doing so, it may still be able to write and read DVD's you create on it today because it's reading laser path (alignment) will exactly match its writing path so the laser doesn't have to be perfect.

Possible solutions:
a. I have not found a DVD lense cleaner disk that I can get to spin up in these drive but that may be worth a shot. (I tried a JVC brand cleaner and it would not read the menu). I had to remove my units top cover and the cover to the DVD drive to get to my laser. It can be cleaned (dusted really) with a gently applied Q-tip.

b. If the above does not work then you may want to substitute the DVD drive to point you in the right direction. WalMart sells an internal 22x LITEON DVD Writer, $39, Bar Code 44149 00406, that you can test or permanently repair with. Unplug your ilo and simply:

1. Set the new 22x drive to MASTER (comes set as slave out of box, see their documentation or the drives cover switch legend markings)

2. Take off the top of the ilo and move the flat data cable and the power connector to the new 22x drive.

3. Give it a test. If your the DVD's read ok then you need the new drive. If not, then your DVD's may have a problem especially if they will not play on other players.

If you need the new drive, it can be installed in this unit and, with some work, look just like the original from the outside. Some other posts also say you can open a hole in the top cover for the cables to exit and just leave the new drive on top of the ilo. Not crazy about that option but up to you.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I need a remote for my ilo dvdr04 recorder. where can i get it?

Go to walmart and get a Philips universal remote, they have the ilo code listed. I have two of them...even though the remote isn't set up like the original ilo remote, you can still record, burn, finalize, and edit. I have the dvdrhd04...which is going into the shop tomorrow to replace the dvd burner, but the hard drive still works like a charm.

Again, you'll have to play with the remote a bit....ARC gets you into the menu and (.) while playing will get you into edit mode, but into another menu when not playing a recorded item. I've used it so much now that I can barely use the original remote. ha ha. The perk is that you can set up your dvd, your tv, digital box and other things to run on one remote.

Hope this helps.

Remotew control

I also have an iLO DVDRHD04. I recently purchased the Philips remotes at Wal-Mart and they have the code for the iLO. You'll have to play with it a bit, but all the functions will work, even though they will not be labled in the same fashion as the original remote. I had to just press buttons and make notes until I got it figured out...but it will work.
