Question about Acer Aspire One D257 Netbook

1 Answer

Why Does Acer charge $100 for removing BIOS? Why Can't they simply help?

I bought an Acer Aspire One on ebay (and yes, I can prove it), and I come to find that there's a BIOS password I can't get past. I can't flash the drive, I can't do anything about the CMOS as it won't help. There's no hash number so I can't hack it. Nothing works. Then I find out Acer charges me $100. Why can't they simply help?

I dont know why but maybe they think you stole it ? but you have a receipt of payment hmmm you might have to take it a little further legal but that might cost $
However you could try this

Restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer

As the computer is booting repeatadly press the F8 key as the computer is booting

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

select safe mode with command prompt

Then type at the C:\> prompt: type

DEBUG

and hit Enter. You'll see a dash (-) at the DEBUG prompt. Now type:

o 70 2e

which will show as -o 70 2e at the DEBUG prompt. Hit Enter. Then type:

o 71 ff

and hit Enter. Finally type:

Q

and hit Enter one last time to quit DEBUG back to the C:\> prompt.
Now you're ready to reboot your PC, and press the appropriate key or key
combo (look it up in your motherboard manual if you don't know it) to access
your BIOS Setup.

Youll notice the password is gone.

If this fails try typing

At command prompt type debug
you will get a - prompt where you can type the following (<enter> means press enter, not type enter*)

A <ENTER>
MOV AX,0 <ENTER>
MOV AX,CX <ENTER>
OUT 70,AL <ENTER>
MOV AX,0 <ENTER>
OUT 71,AL <ENTER>
INC CX <ENTER>
CMP CX,100 <ENTER>
JB 103 <ENTER>
INT 20 <ENTER>
<ENTER> just hit enter on this line
G <ENTER>
Q <ENTER>

Basic BIOS password - works 9.9 times out of ten

If this fails you will need to

Select safe mode with networking to download

you could download all of these or just one save them to a usb drive for later use if one fails to remove the password

At some stage you might need to press Ctrl+Enter rather than just Enter if on a Dell Latitude E5410

That's a really quality answer, but unfortunately F2, F8, F10 does nothing. Even Flashing the BIOS leads me to the "Enter Current Password". And Yes, I do have a recipt of proof for the purchase. Acer doesn't care and will not assist me without $100

does your keyboard work ? it should be the F2 key you might have to remove the cmos battery some acer aspire do have removable cmos batteries Remove the Phillips screws that secure the motherboard cover (refer to your owner's manual if necessary), then release the cover from the clips on the bottom of the plastic casing. Lay the cover aside, then locate the CMOS battery cable on the right side of the motherboard. Unplug the cable, then remove the battery.

leave it out for 5 to 50 sec did you try any other keys to enter bios like F1

I tried quite a few options that were shown online. I tried F1-F12. I tried to Flash the BIOS with multiple files from a bootalbe USB. It almost works (flashes to a booting screen) then jumps back to 'Enter Current Password'. I'll be trying the battery thing but I've heard that doesn't work with D257.... but lets hope.

yes some laptops have an inbuilt chip designed to save bios settings if the batterery was to die you might try the first one again using the command prompt but with quit being the last instead of just q also Pressing Alt and F10 on the Acer logo screen boots the Aspire One into D2D Recovery

    that would be type debug o 70 2E o 71 FF quit

The finger print bull is how that password came up for me and they want a 125.00 to remove it. I called the better business bureau and filed a complaint. They shouldn't have any right to control your laptop. I to have a 6292 , took it apart as far as I could and could not find jumper or password. This is a gimmick to make money.

Try tapping the Delete key instead.

It say here you use F2, but you have to do a complete shutdown rather than a restart. You have to keep tapping as soon as you see a logo or life!

    Sim unlock for acer aspire

You don't. Sim cards are for cell phones to make calls. It's basically a calling card. Phones and computers connect on different networks. That's why cell carriers have a separate data plan / charge.

I just answered a similar question. Am I missing something? Oh, I see web access via cell phone. Still not possible.

What I believe they were mentioning is Flash the BIOS to the most current version, which should on the Acer support site (Support.acer.com or such)
If the old battery wasn't charging and the new one doesn't either then there also may be a hardware issue with the charging circuit if the BIOS flash doesn't resolve, at which time you discuss that issue with Acer if under warranty.

I bios password for acer laptop. how can enter the correct one

Quick answer is you cannot, without remembering it setting a BIOS password is a great security measure but if you forget it then it can be a significant problem to reset the computer.
The BIOS is controlled by a battery on the motherboard simply removing this battery may "not" fix the issue as resetting the BIOS password. I do not recommend you doing this, taking it to a qualified repair center and proving ownership is your best bet.

    Acer Aspire 4315 BIOS Recovery

    Hi there.
After using killcmos you should have updated the bios straight away, this is because you have wiped all the bios settings. As soon as you restarted the laptop you effectively killed the computer, getting it recovered can now prove near impossible. The only option you have left now is to locate the bios battery, remove it for an hour to see if the bios resets, other than that Acer may be able to help.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
