Can I view the photos on my SD card on the camera and not use USB cord, or do I have to put SD card in computer?

Yes, most cameras allow you to view pictures on the camera! Obviously viewing on a PC screen would be clearer because of the screen size compared with the smaller camera screen!

If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. The camera should have come with a USB cable with which to connect the camera straight to the computer. Connect the camera (with the memory card inserted) to the computer and see if you can access the photos.

Hi Elizabeth617,
Here's how you access the pictures from your SD card:
  • Connect your G1 to your computer via USB
  • Pull down the notification menu and select "USB connected: Select to copy files to/from your computer."
  • "Turn on USB storage"
  • Now open your phone in a folder on your computer
  • You will see a folder that says DCIM (This is where your pictures are stored)
  • Open DCIM and view the pictures in the folder Camera

Cannot get pictures from my camera

If you can view the pictures on the preview of the camera itself then the pictures are safe. It is possible the photos reside in the INTERNAL camera memory rather than on the SD card. You may have to have the camera transfer them.

It is also possible that the SD card is NOT compatible with your camera.

What I would do is to procure a seperate SD card reader (they are very inexpensive) and remove the card from the camera and read it using the external interface.

NOTE: There are high density SD cards that are usually not compatible with older cameras... they are marked HD.
