SOURCE: S0000 Presario MB was diagnosed as bad by Staples techs..

HP Support, and the main menu support page for the Compaq Presario S6900NX Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=397263&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=9&submit.x=7&lang=en&cc=us

[Left-click on Product Information, then Product specifications, and Product specifications again. Photo of the computer on the page is inaccurate]

Motherboard Specifications: (To able to know what specifications are needed for the new motherboard)

1) Has a Socket A processor socket. (Socket A is also referred to as Socket 462)

Will support AMD processors with a 400MegaHertz Front Side Bus. (400MHz FSB)

[Mega = approximately 1 Million
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.
400 Million Cycles per Second ]

Right now, you should have an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor installed. (Compaq's info is erroneous)

(Operates at a maximum frequency rate of 2.167GigaHertz. {2.167GHz}

Has a 512MB amount of L2 cache.
FSB of 400MHz.
Based on the Barton Core, and the 130nanometer architecture. {130nm}

With the heatsink, and thermal paste removed, you should see the part number - AXDA3000DKV4D - printed on the top of the processor case.

Compaq's spec's are erroneous concerning the maximum frequency rate. They list it as 2.0GHz. Probably rounded down.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_XP_microprocessors#Athlon_XP_.22Barton.22_.28Model_10.2C_130_nm.29

2) Ram Memory supported.

Supports DDR Sdram that operates at a frequency rate of 400MHz. (PC3200)

Two ram memory slots with a Maximum Amount for EACH slot of 512MB.
Total Amount of ram memory supported is 1GB.
(512MegaByte + 512MB = 1GigaByte)

3) Harddrive interface is IDE.
(IDE is also referred to as PATA)

Optical drive interface is also IDE.

4) Graphics slot type:
AGP 8X

Should be the MIcro-ATX Form Factor
9.6 inches by 9.6 inches.
9.6 inches is approximately 9 - 9/16ths inches.
(The ATX form factor size was a typo. { Big fingers } Should be 12 inches by 9.6 inches)

As you look at the rear of the computer, the I/O ports should be on the Left side. Again, ATX Form Factor

This helps explain the Motherboard Form Factor,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_computer_form_factors

Now before I go further, I need to ask some more questions if I may.

1) Why is the motherboard being replaced?

May sound like a 'Duh!' question, but perhaps you wish to see if there is a better motherboard available from a 3rd party manufacturer, and the motherboard is not bad.

2) What makes you think the motherboard is bad, if this is the problem for wanting to replace it?

3) Do I assume the motherboard is bad in your Compaq Presario, and you have removed it?
Can you give me the approximate measurements of it?

Motherboard removed look at the Support Plate. The Support Plate is the flat area of metal that is behind the motherboard, and is what the motherboard mounts to.

It can be a separate metal plate from the computer case's metal framework, or is fastened to the metal frame work, and is an integral part of the computer case.

Look at all of the motherboard mounting holes on the support plate. There may be holes that have MATX, or mATX stamped next to them. Stands for Micro-ATX.

If my info is correct about the form factor of your motherboard, these are the holes that would be used.

Look to see if there are also other mounting holes in the Support Plate that have ATX stamped next to them.
This means you can use either a MIcro-ATX, or ATX motherboard.

This changes the playing field.

4) What is your contingency plan to reinstall the Operating System if needed? Do you have a full installation CD of Windows XP?
Or is there another Windows version you have in mind, or a version of Linux?

When Windows is installed on a computer, it assigns hash values to the various major hardware components.
You can think of these hash values to represent serial numbers for the hardware components, but in reality they aren't.
No personal information is recorded with them.

Some of the major hardware components are,
1) Processor

2) Motherboard (To be more specific the BIOS program, and version, as well as the motherboard chipset)

3) Harddrive

4) Graphics used:

Graphics chip on the motherboard if just the Integrated, or Onboard graphics are being used of the motherboard itself.
.
Graphics chip on the graphics card, if a graphics card is being used. (Graphics chip = GPU. Graphics Processing Unit)

Change any 2 hardware components, and a red flag is thrown up.
(No, not a real red flag, jeez. lol!)

Microsoft Users License states 'One Genuine copy of Windows per One computer'

Change any 2 components, and the red flag goes up because it thinks it is being stolen.
Someone is trying to take that genuine copy of Windows, and put it on another computer, also.

Windows may want to be activated again.
Or it may just throw up a blue screen. (BSOD)
Or it may do nothing, and purr right along.
Windows is a 'funny animal'.

Side note:
Heck yeah support live jazz!
Although I've been listening to a lot of Leona Lewis' stuff lately.

SOURCE: compaq presario S0000/8000 won't turn on. Green

No, I would approach it a different way, with the diagnostic LED's that are blinking.

Indication is that the Power Supply has a weak Voltage power rail. If you test the 12 Volt power rail, I think you'll find it's less than 11 Volts.
(11 to 13 is okay. Less than 11 requires a Power Supply replacement)

You can test with an economical multimeter, (Usually $5 to $12), or an economical power supply tester.

One example, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5250576&CatId=5471

Or, you can substitute the power supply in the computer now, with a KNOWN to be Good, Compatible power supply, for a test unit.

[Compatible being:
1) Right size and shape of case. The cas is approximately 6 inches Long, 6 inches Wide, and 3-1/2 inches Tall.
It is an ATX style of Power Supply.

2.Has the correct power cables, and the correct amount of power cables. If there are more power cables than needed, they are tied up out of the way with zip ties ]

May sound a little far fetched, but I have known people to have computers with a KNOWN to be good Power Supply, that are sitting around, and no longer being used. The Power Supply is borrowed for a test unit.

Generally, the cause of computer failure can be attributed to the inside of the computer, and the inside of the Power Supply is dirty.

The Power Supply has two cooling components.
One being the Fan, the other are Heatsink's used inside the Power Supply.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply

Once the cooling components are coated with gunk, the cooling capacity drops tremendously.
Heat = Wasted Energy

The more heat, the more the Power Supply strains to keep up with the call for power.
Eventually components inside the Power Supply fail, and the Power Supply fails.

The second cause of Power Supply failure is that it is a low quality unit, and low quality components are used inside.

Next are Power Surges, lightning strikes, and brownouts.

To summerize:
I believe you'll find you have a bad Power Supply.
If you wish to test it with a multimeter simply state in a Comment.
(Upper right of your page)

If you wish help in finding a replacement unit, also let me know.

SOURCE: need to upgrade cpu for

As you have stated it's a Compaq Presario S0000/S8000 SERIES desktop computer.

One of the S0000/S8000 series.
Without knowing the exact model number I have no idea of what hardware is installed on the motherboard.

On the back of the computer tower, or up on the side, is a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number. This is the exact model number I need.

Also; Going to HP Support with the exact model number may not reveal the info I need, either.
They may not list the specifications, and therefore the installed hardware, for your computer.
There is an easy way around this, however.
Use CPU-Z from CPUID.com

What info is needed in order to know if the Processor can be upgraded:

A) Processor Socket: What processor socket is installed on the motherboard. This is what the Processor sits in.

Just two examples for Intel processors; Socket 478, and LGA 775 processor socket.

1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478

With this style of processor socket, the processor socket has the socket holes, and the processor has the contact pins. (478 holes/478 pins)

2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

With this style of processor socket, the socket has the pins, while the processor has contact pads.

There are other styles of Intel processor sockets. There are also AMD processors which can be used, and have many different processor sockets also.

B) What motherboard chipset is used.
Specifically, what Northbridge chip is used.

3) Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit

For your motherboard the motherboard chipset is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.

{So aptly named Northbridge, and Southbridge, for the relation of how they sit on the motherboard.
Looking at a motherboard as if it were a map, the Processor sits to the North.

The Northbridge chip sits close to the Processor.
The Southbridge chip sits to the 'South' on the motherboard }

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

4) Motherboard Diagram,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

Knowing what processor socket is used, and what Northbridge chip, we can accurately determine what processors are supported.

CPU-Z is a tiny, free program that without opening your computer, tells you what hardware is installed on your motherboard.
Tells you what processor socket, and Northbridge chip are used, for one.

5) This is information on CPU-Z. Shows you a screenshot of the user interface of CPU-Z,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU-Z

Left-click on the CPU-Z user interface to the upper right of the page, to enlarge it.
(Under the bold CPU-Z heading)

When CPU-Z opens it automatically opens to the CPU tab.
(Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or simply Processor for short)

To the right of - Package - tells you what processor socket is used.
Clicking on the Mainboard tab tells you what motherboard chipset is used.

6) CPU-Z download page,

http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.56-setup-en.exe

Left-click on Download now! in the purple rectangular box.
A small window will come up on the right side -
Opening cpu-z_1.56-setup-en.exe

Left-click right on Save File
Another small window will come up on the left.
In the header at the top of this small window, tells you where the file will download to.

In the wording may be Desktop, or My Documents, or Downloads.

Desktop: The file will be on your desktop screen.

My Documents: Left-click on Start, then on My Documents

Downloads: Left-click on Start, then on My Documents. DOUBLE-click on Downloads.

When you see the file name DOUBLE-click right on it.
Follow the easy installation instructions.

Go back to your desktop screen. Double-click on the CPU-Z icon.
When CPU-Z has loaded, come back here in a Comment, and tell me;

1) In the CPU tab, what is stated to the right of - Package

2) Left-click on the Mainboard tab.

What is stated to right of;
A) Manufacturer
B) Model
C) Chipset
D) Southbridge

Unlock Bios Compac evo

On most PCs you can open the BIOS by hitting while the computer is booting: Del, F10, F2, Alt+Enter, F1. These are the most common but if they don't work just hit keep hitting your different "F" keys each time you boot one of them should open the BIOS. If the BIOS is password protected you'll need to either remove the BIOS/CMOS battery or short out the reset jumper on the motherboard.
