Hi, Sorry to hear you are having problems,
So, tell me is this a 17”, a 20” or a 24” iMac?
Have you ever opened or had this iMac opened by a technician ? If so, they may not have put it back together properly.
If not, this sounds like you might have to get in there and re-seat the optical drive.
are you handy and courageous or do you want to have someone else take care of it.
I should not be an expensive repair, no parts necessary, Apple service center should take care of this for about $150
Otherwise, take a look at this and maybe try it yourself:
http://www.kodawarisan.com/index.html
Now I know, it's a Korean website, in Korean, but the list on the right hand side, has the take apart information you need.
Good luck

My internal optical drive spits out dvd's and cd's.

When rebooting press and hold the Alt key until it displays all bootable drives. Now insert your disk. If it works install Leopard from here. If not then your drive is dead or faulty and needs checking or replacing.

All the best

Sound is controlled in the Systems Preferences. Go to the Apple icon (top left on top menu bar), then Systems Preferences > Sound. Check the Input Output configurations, making sure that mute is off and volume is on appropriately. I would think the "Built In" choices would be appropriate. I hope this helps.
