SOURCE: I have a Craftsman Line Trimmer, model 316791890.

Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 (Star bit or Torx head) screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a hammer and a dull flat-blade chisel or a small piece of wood unless there are bolts. then use a wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws hoding the cover to the engine. You will now have unlimited access.

The engine runs fine. The trimmer head does not spin I believes it a clutch problem. How do you test and/or remove it to replace it?


Are the drive shafts engaged properly? you need to remove all the plastic engine covers and handle to access the clutch. I can send you the IPL if you need it.

Mcculloch mac 2818 carburetor settings?


I'll assume this is a chainsaw! Do you know Maculloch went bankrupt in 1999! Either way the carb setting are from all the way in (softly) and back out 1-1/4 turns. Unit should start at this position, the low will need to be adjusted out and high speed adjusted in, incrementally.

The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or vise grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place while holding the handle. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers

The pull chord is jammed i cannot remove the part that the cord is wound on in order to unwind it....help please


Here is a condensed version of getting to the starter/recoil unit to inspect or repair.
Remove the tube that holds the flex drive from the end of the crankshaft. Lossen and remove the front cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carb. Remove the kill switch wire from the coil module. Remove clutch housing. Remove clutch, Remove flywheel. The recoil unit mates with the bottom of the flywheel and all the aforementioned parts are on the front side of the engine's crankshaft. Once you get the recoil unit off, you remove the old cord and turn the unit several times to "preload" tension on it. Insert the new cord into the guide holes and tie knots to lock it in place. The pull handle must be attatched too or when you let the recoil draw in the new rope, it will keep going and all tension will be lost. Reassemble all the above and good luck!

How to replace clutch on weedeater


The metal cover over the clutch is held on with a screw in the center. It takes a #15 or 20 TORX screwdriver. Once that is off you will see which way to take off the clutch. Good luck...Lee

Motor works fine, but trimmer will not rotate


Have an assistant start and hold the trimmer. At idle, there should still be a little drag on the clutches to make the shaft spin on that split shaft trimmer with the accessory head removed. No need to rev it or do anything fancy, but teamwork will make it safer.

Now forget about the engine and clutches - does the accessory head spin freely when turned by hand (removed from engine still!) and with a clear rotation of the shaft end visible inside the connector socket? Is the shaft end square with sharply defines angles, or rounded off? Does swapping in a different accessory function normally and as expected?

Sometimes the nub end of the shaft wears. Worse, the socket on the engine side has eaten itself to pieces. Worse, worse yet, clutches in the engine side that engage the accessory shaft are worn and there is simply no transmission of power. Good luck, hopefully this info will set your boots in the right direction!

String trimmer, fuel lines disintegrated, I need routing.


The Walbro has two connections on it for the fuel line. My Walbro has one connection on the side of the idle screw and main fuel adjusting screw. This connection hooks up to the suction side of the primer bulb. Usually the shorter stem. (You actually **** fuel through the carb instead of pushing it through.) On the other side of the carb is the other hook up. It draws fuel from the tank. This line will connect to the side of the tank that has the filter. The other side of the tank is your return and it hooks to the other connection on the primer bulb. Usually the longer stem.
