To test radio to see if its working you can bench test it. This means to combine red and yellow and run to 12V positive and Black to 12V negative. IF radio turns on, it would mean its working.

Some albums in USB stick are not recognized by JVC X40 USB reader

hi mark, before going further try this out.......use a smaller usb stick like a 4gb or 8gb with some music mp3 data arranged in folders like the way you have, and check out the response/performance. from my experience many car units cannot run/decode info from large capacity usb drives. if this also does not work then check out your nearest jvc service centre for advice. cheers.

I hooked up my JVC KD-R200 to a 1991 Toyota Tercel and I can't get the face of the stereo to turn on. No sound, no radio stations, just the lights around and on the buttons come on. I have another stereo...

try reversing your red (accessory) and yellow (constant) wire... also check the fuse on the back of the radio. and it wouldn't hurt to clean the connector between the faceplate and the radio either corrosion can cause this....

It sounds like your stereo is working properly. I've never seen a car stereo that was wired properly that you could turn on and listen to while the car was off with the key removed from the ignition switch. You would have to move the ignition switch to the accessory position in order to get the stereo to work. Hope this helps. Good luck. Mike D.
