#56 humidistat not turning blower and water solenoid on

Replaced 30 volt power solenoid on aprilaire 112 unit since it prematurely shut water solenoid off even with jumper on humidistat wire. New unit operates both fan and solenoid just fine with jumper. There is 30 volts to rc terminal on #56 post. Dial does click around #5 but no fan or solenoid operation . I jumped ODT terminal and this temporarily turns on red LED but no humidifyer operation This #56 panel is switched to power on board. Pot next to it is directed to "C" All units were fine last year.

There is 120 volts to power cord of Aprilaire 112 humidifier. The 30 volts is coming from the lead wires of the internal transformer I just replaced as it should. The question is why the # 56 humidistat does not let the unit work as when jumping the 30volt supply

Problems we see ever now and then with humidifiers where the water will not flow, or the water will not stop running, even when the humidifier is turned off. In many cases it could be a bad water solenoid valve. Check the following before condemning the water solenoid valve.

  • Make sure the water saddle valve is not restricted by turning the saddle valve on. Loosen the compression nut slightly where the 1/4" copper tubing enters the saddle valve. If water comes out then your saddle valve is not clogged, and is OK. If there is no water coming out then you will need to replace your saddle valve.
  • Take the compression nut loose on the end of the solenoid valve that exits up to the water distribution tray (not the end where the water supply copper tube enters). After you take the tube off you should see a tiny plastic orifice up inside the tubing. Lots of time I see the orifice stopped up with hard water deposits. The orifices are sold below. This will definitely cause the water to not flow in your humidifier. You can take a thin needle and reopen the hole or purchase another orifice to eliminate this problem.
  • If you water flow continuously and will not shut off when the blower stops you probably need a new water solenoid valve. You can check to see if it is the solenoid valve or an electrical malfunction problem by turning your furnace power off or unplug your humidifier. If the water continues to flow with the power off then you definitely need one of the valves listed below.

If the unit was installed with a saddle valve, which is most often the case, you could try turning down the water pressure by tightening the valve a bit. Just follow the copper water line from the humidifier back to the main water line and look for a little valve that you can turn. Try to tighten this enough so that you still have water flowing, but at the proper volume so that it doesn't overflow and splash all over.

Water is not getting to the humidifier. Unit does not appear to be turning on when furnace starts

Check to see if you are getting 24 volts at the solenoid valve, if you are then the solenoid valve is bad and needs to be replaced. If you are not getting 24 volts at the solenoid valve then check to see if 24 volts is present at the transformer, if it is then check the wiring to make sure it's tight, humidistat, and current sensing relay/ sail switch. If you are not getting 24 volts at the transformer then turn off power to transformer and set your meter to continuity and check the secondary sie of the transformer, you should get resistance if not the transformer is bad and must be replaced.

Aprilaire 400 humidifier. No water flowing to the pad. I've checked the supply -- working. Replaced the solenoid, not working. Checked the electrical to he solenoid wnen system callilng for water -- no...

Check to see if you are getting 24 volts from the transformer, if not, turn off power to the transformer and check the resistance of the secondary side, if no resistance the transformer is bad and need to be replaced. Also check to make sure all the wires are secure. If you are getting voltage at the transformer then bring power directly from transformer directly to solenoid valve and it should click open and let the water through, if it does then either the sailswitch/current sensing relay is bad or humidistat is bad.

Aprilaire 550 There is no water going through the solenoid to the feed tube. I recently purched a new solenoid.

The first thing to check is if you are getting 24 volts at the transformer, if you are not then turn off power the transformer and check continuity. u should have continuity if not replace the transformer. If you are getting 24 volts at the transformer then apply 24 volts directly from transfomer to solenoid valve you should hear the solenoid cleck open and let the water in, if not then the solenoid is bad and must be replaced. If the solenoid does work by applying voltage directly to it then check the
wiring and make sure it;s all tight. Also check the humidistat and current sensing relay/sail switch to make sure it's functioning properly.

Water and motor always run on Aprilaire 760, even when furnace is off.

Hope this solves your problem, look for the humidistat, it should be located on cold air return duct near furnace, make sure it is not set in the on position, if it is, then this is why it is staying on, please set humidistat any where from 20 to 35%, never over 40%. If the humidistat is set properly and is still running, you may have a electrical problem, humidifier circuit should only receive power(24 volts) when the indoor blower motor of furnace receives power, also if you have galvanized plumbing in your home, you may have a piece of rust or lime deposit in the humidifier solenoid valve preventing it from closing, turn water off to humidifier and disconnect water supply line entering solenoid valve inspect & clean protector screen. Good luck.

Aprilaire 600 problem

It sounds like you got it...

The solenoid will not open with only 13 volts to it. Jump or apply the full 24-27 volts to the solenoid and see if it clicks and opens and allows water to flow.

If the valve still won't open or pass water, start looking for a plugged inlet solenoid inlet screen or a faulty solenoid valve as well as a faulty humidistat.

My Aprilaire 550 is bone dry. How do I know if its the Humidistat or Celinoide?

Turn off the water to the humidifier

Disconnect the water line to the inlet water valve (the solenoid), catch any excess water or drips in a small container

Turn the water back on slowly and see if water flows through the open line (the one you just disconnected - catch the water in a small bucket)

If you have water to the valve, it's probably the solenoid valve - you can test this by reconnecting the water line and turning the humidistat all the way up. You should hear a click as the solenoid tries to open. If it clicks and no water comes out it's the valve. If there is no water to the valve, you'll need to detrmine the reason(s). Sometimes the small line tap valves commonly used with humidifiers can plug up or malfunction. If you try to repair or replace the tap valve, make sure the water is turned off.

If no click, it could be the humidistat or there is no power to the unit.
If the humidistat is bad, you won't hear any click and no power will be sent to the solenoid valve. In that case, the humidistat may be defective.

Depending on your comfort level and knowledge, you can try applying power directly to the valve by bypassing the humidistat, but only try this if you are comfortable working with electricity. The voltage should be around 24 volts (in the USA) , which is low, but requires some knowledge.

My water never stops running into Aprilaire 112

Disconnect the two yellow wires. The water should stop. If it does you have a bad (or miswired) humidistat. If the water does not stop the solenoid valve is bad. These valves are known to be expensive. You might want to consider replacing the whole unit.
Good luck

Aprilaire 560 constantly drains water

check to see if you have 24 volts between to 2 yellow wires coming out of the water solenoid. if you have 24v, then it is still getting energized to run. if it does not have 24v and the water is still running, the solenoid is stuck open. most likely from water deposits. sometimes you can take the solenoid apart and clean it, but probably better off just getting a new solenoid.

Aprilaire model 760

It could be that the humidistat is not calling for humidity. Make sure that you have the dial turned up all the way (as far as it will go, just to test it) and that the blower on the furnace is running - if the unit is properly wired, the water will not run unless the blower on the furnace is running. This should do the trick. If not, the only other thing would be a bad humidistat. Good Luck!
