Hi Richard, it is a very loud buzzing. It sounds as the normal compressor sound but multiplied by 1,000. I have a surge protector but it started just after a power failure

OK, unplug the unit and remove the relay on the compressor and shake it and let me know if it rattles.

  • Jose Perdomo Nov 27, 2012

Dear Richard, I unplugged the unit but before checking the relay I tried to find out where the vibration came for. The compressor/motor was running smoothly and the sound came from the left side (looking from the back)) like coming from the freezer. I removed the lower tray (a lot difficult) if it is full of frozen item). The upper tray is a little more complicated so I left it in place and start looking for a vibration related to the sound. In the ceiling of the freezer there is a compartment holding the light ( there is a design problem because the switch is always frozen). The vibration came from that compartment so probably there is a fan in there which produces the flow of cool air from the freezer to the upper fridge. I knocked it a few times. Nothing happened but after a few seconds the noise stopped. Luck, magic, faith I don't know. I am going to left the freezer off and open for a 1/2 hour and then try again. I'll be back to you with the results. But definitely the problem was a vibration in whatever is in the ceiling of the freezer compartment. Thank you

SOURCE: Clicking noise coming from whirlpool refrigerator

The clicking sound is a relay called PTC relay. You need to replace it. First be sure to unplug frig. Remove the cardboard cover that covers most backs of the frig units. Remove the plastic cover that is on the side of compressor. It is held on with a metal clip. Now you should be able to see the relay pry the relay straight off. note the wiring and position of relay. Only three prongs on compressor. Go to a parts house for appliance's and with your make and model number should be able to get a new one. Let me know if you need any more help. ken

SOURCE: knocking noise coming from Whirlpool Gold refrigerator

Mine does it too. I know what it is because I repair them for a living. That is the sound of ice expanding as the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost on the evaporator. The next ime you hear it make a note of the time. Every 8 to 10 hours it will go into defrost mode. The ice box will also quit working for 21 minutes.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Top-Mount Refrigerator Freezer warm, cracking noise

8yr old? Buy a new one. The cracking sound is from expansion and contraction of the cabinet and ice cooling or defrosting. It can be as simple as a bit of a top up of refrigerant, but can also be that your compressor has worn down the valve plates and therefore is not producing sufficient pressure throught the system.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gold Conquest light is flashing and clicking sound

With sounds like that I would use caution if installing a light bulb there. The sound and description sounds like a short circuit. Did this happen recently? Could you get me the complete model number, for example GS6SHEXN
Let me know, Thanks Sea Breeze

How do I my whirlpool model G115NDXZB0

You may have a compressor failure, due to the failure of the fan.
Have you tried turning the fridge off for a few hours and re-starting it?
If the compressor then starts without any unusual noises, it might just be overheated, and a replacemaent fan will cure it.
Otherwise, it looks like a new compressor and fan will be needed.

Whirlpool gold gs65haxmL00 just got noisy

I think if you could pull the refrigerator away from wall and remove the paper cover that covers the compressor and condenser area located down near floor with out reaching inside examine fan and compressor sounds from behind. Grab a light and look to see where the sound is coming from. Condenser fans tend to become loose on the shaft and Technicians call this shaft play. Shaft play can lead to the fan touching the outer housing or shroud that directs the air over condenser to keep it cool and the inside of refrigerator cold. Shaft play can also lead to fan failure and the the compressor will become too hot to run normally. It would not cost anything to look because sounds seem to bounce when you are not near where they are made. I will be back in a few minutes with a user manual and parts manual for your model, Thanks Sea Breeze

Whirlpool Conquest Gold White Model# - GS6SHAXLQ03

The relay is the start device, but you need to determine if you need it,try to see if you have power to the compressor,is the compressor running,is the condenser fan motor running,is the coil under the unit clogged with dust,if the fan under the unit doesn't run it will overheat the compressor and it will go off. and if the coil is clogged the same thing goes.
Usually if the relay is bad the compressor will make a hum and a click noise but will not actually run.about every 5 minutes..

Whirlpool Gold Fridge w/ freezer on top. LOUD banging noises.

I think the banging means the compressor is shot. (more like a load "clunk"). I had the same noise on a dehumifier.) I dont' think replacing a compressor is a DIY, and doubt it is economically efficient. But I leave that to the specialists to comment on. Check Craig's List in your area - you can get a good deal for a few hundred bucks.

Also, the "clanging noices" is probably the fan blades for the air circulator that moves cold air from the freezer to refrig compartment. Check the online manual for your model (exploded parts view) to see where it is located and if it is readily accessible by taking out a few screws inside the refrigerator. Might be more than one fan - open the door when it happens and see if you can locate where the noice is coming from. This is a plausible DIY - I did it only my old fridge - replacement parts were cheap. But you might even be able to just reallign the fan blades so they don't clang.
